Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1000 AM PST Tue Jan 1 2019 .SYNOPSIS...A cold upper low has moved through the region leaving behind gusty north winds and much colder temperatures. The coldest morning will be Wednesday with widespread freezing temperatures expected. A warming trend is on tap for the second half of the week with temperatures likely to be a few degrees above normal by the end of the week. && .UPDATE...Winds were developing about as expected this morning and will continue to increase down the Colorado River Valley through early afternoon then gradually decrease the rest of the day. As winds drop after sunset, widespread subfreezing temps across the Mojave Desert Region will occur overnight through early Wednesday morning. The trends in the previous discussion are supported by the latest observations and 12Z model guidance. && .PREV DISCUSSION...310 AM PST .SHORT TERM...through Wednesday morning. The upper low that brought gusty winds and much colder temperatures to the region is currently located over northern Arizona. This low will continue to move east, but we will still feel the effect over the next couple of days. We will continue to see gusty north winds through at least mid morning over most areas with winds gradually diminishing during the afternoon. The exception will be the Colorado River Valley where gusty winds will remain in place through the day and will be strong enough to warrant a Lake Wind Advisory, which is already in place. These winds are expected to be strongest during the afternoon with winds gradually tapering off around sunset. A few clouds could linger over northern Mohave County, but any precipitation will remain well east of the CWA. The next big concern will be the very cold temperatures on tap for Wednesday morning. With a very cold airmass in place and generally light winds over most areas, temperatures are expected to be rather low. Temperatures in Las Vegas are forecast to be in the mid to upper 20s, but outlying areas such as Mountains Edge, Henderson, Summerlin, and Nellis will likely see temperatures drop into the lower 20s with some upper teens possible. Very cold temperatures are also expected in places that normally don't see reading this low such as northern San Bernardino, Pahrump, southern Clark, and southern Mohave Counties. For this reason, we have issued a hard freeze warning for Wednesday morning. && .LONG TERM...Wednesday through Monday. Still expecting a warming trend to begin at the higher elevations on Wednesday and spread down to the valleys Thursday and Friday under high pressure aloft. North winds should stay strong in the Colorado River Valley on Wednesday before subsiding. Models have trended toward de-emphasizing the storm system previously expected to affect much of the region on Sunday. Current runs suggest a quicker moving storm, with precip chances reaching the Sierra Saturday afternoon, spreading east across our area Saturday night and Sunday, and ending late Sunday. Models then show an atmospheric river directed into northern California Sunday and Monday, with our area seeing clouds at most from this feature. Temps should come down a few degrees over the weekend as the storm system passes by, but not as much as previously thought assuming that the new models are closer to being accurate. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Northwest to north winds are likely to continue through mid morning with speeds between 15-25 kts. Winds are forecast to turn more northeast after 19z with speeds around 10- 20 kts. Winds look to remain northeast this evening, but wind speeds should drop below 10 kts. Clear skies expected. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...North-northeast winds of 15-25 knots will persist across much of the region through the day with stronger winds down the Colorado River Valley near Laughlin-Bullhead City where winds will likely be in the 20-30 kt range and gusts to around 35 kts.
