Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 926 AM PDT Sat Aug 3 2019 .SYNOPSIS...Monsoon conditions are expected to remain east of the area through early next week with afternoon and evening thunderstorms possible in portions of Mohave County along the western edge of the deeper moisture. A prolonged period of above normal temperatures will increase Heat Risk across parts of the area through early next week. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for areas where the threat of heat related impacts are greatest. && .UPDATE...Showers and storms will be limited to Mohave County and eastern Lincoln County this afternoon and evening. Low to mid-grade monsoon moisture remains in place in these areas which when combined with increasing instability today should fire off some isolated to scattered activity after noon. Gusty winds and brief, locally heavy rain will be the main concerns with any stronger storms. Elsewhere, dry conditions and above normal temps are expected today and the Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect for portions of the lower elevations across the area. The only forecast updates made were to increase chances for rain across eastern Lincoln County today. && .DISCUSSION...Saturday through Friday The synoptic weather pattern as it pertains to the monsoon and associated moisture remains essentially static through next Tuesday. Models keep high pressure centered near the Four Corners region with deeper moisture east of our area. Any thunderstorm chances will be limited to isolated afternoon/evening convection over parts of Mohave County. The main concern over the weekend and into early next week is forecasted hot conditions with high temperatures around 5-7 degrees above normal persisting through Tuesday. In addition to the these hot afternoon temperatures, there will be little relief overnight for a prolonged period of heat stress for the most vulnerable population. An Excessive Heat Warning goes into effect today and continues through Monday evening. Heat Risk values of 2-3 today increase to 3-4 for Sunday and Monday. The Heat Risk values decrease to 2s and 3s on Tuesday however the morning lows are forecast to be as warm or warmer than the previous few mornings while Tuesday highs are forecast to only be a couple of degrees cooler than Monday. An extension to the warning to include Tuesday is possible and will be re-evaluated today. Looking further out in the week...an area of low pressure that develops off the Pacific Northwest coast tonight remains nearly stationary through Tuesday before slowly moving to the coast late in the week. This nudges the Four Corners high to the east and allows heights to fall and temperatures aloft to cool. This will help bring temperatures down closer to normal and bring an end this round of excessive heat. Low grade monsoon conditions are forecast to mainly impact portions of Mohave County. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Light, variable winds expected after sunrise. Winds will begin to favor an east to southeast around noon. Expect a gradual transition to a southwesterly wind between 22z-00z. Southwest winds are expected through Sunday morning. Winds will follow a similar pattern on Sunday. No operationally significant cloud cover expected. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Winds will closely follow yesterdays diurnal pattern. Strongest winds are expected at KBIH and KDAG, where gusts 20-25 knots are possible. Elsewhere winds are expected to be 5-12 knots with isolated gusts, if any.
