Steering flow aloft is very weak (generally NE 5kt), so showers and storms will generally stay over the high terrain and be short lived. Drier air aloft begins to move in from the west on Monday and Tuesday. Current forecast is on track with no updates planned. && .AVIATION...Mostly VFR. Scattered showers and thunderstorms return this afternoon. Periods of heavy rain may result in MVFR conditions at impacted terminals. Patchy valley fog possible Monday morning. Surface winds: Variable at less than 10 kts outside of thunderstorms where gusts to 20 kts will be possible. The low will tend to go gradually south by Monday allowing drier westerly flow aloft into our area and fewer showers and thunderstorms. By Tuesday all areas should be sunny and again on Wednesday. Temperatures today will be much like Saturday, then a degree or two warmer Monday and holding level Tuesday and Wednesday. No significant winds through Wednesday except near thunderstorms. LONG TERM...Wednesday night through Saturday...As an upper trough approaches the PacNW, flow aloft turns southwesterly as temperatures begin to cool. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will return Thursday evening with lingering activity at higher elevations into Friday. Beyond Friday, the extended forecast becomes challenging. The GFS quickly progresses the trough eastward and returns to nearly zonal flow, while the ECMWF maintains a low pressure system over the area through Sunday. The NBM was used heavily in weekend PoPs due to its successful track record in the extended, showing mostly dry conditions through the weekend with potential showers in the West Central Idaho Mountains.
