Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI
304 PM CDT Mon Aug 7 2017
.TONIGHT AND TUESDAY...Forecast Confidence Is High.
High pressure will dominate this period. A much drier airmass has
moved in from the northeast as noted by isodrosotherm analysis
and area and less cu coverage in the northeast cwa. Core of the
high slides to our south on Tuesday with a light westerly flow
noted. Mid level ridging and the dry airmass prevails with some
bump in 925 temps.
.TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.
Models are in general agreement with bringing one 500 mb vorticity
maximum through the area Wednesday, with another Wednesday night,
and the main shortwave trough moving toward the area Thursday. At
the surface, high pressure is expected to slowly slide to the east
southeast Tuesday night and Wednesday. Weak low pressure
associated with the approaching shortwave trough will then slide
across central Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin.
Area forecast soundings are showing a few hundred J/kg of mean
layer CAPE developing Wednesday afternoon. This may combine with
the passing 500 mb vorticity maximum to bring a few showers. For
now, kept things dry Wednesday afternoon, but some low PoPs may be
needed in later forecasts. Temperatures look to remain near
seasonal normals Tuesday night and Wednesday. Lake breeze should
develop near Lake Michigan Wednesday afternoon.
There should be modest increases in column moisture later
Wednesday night into Thursday across the area. Forecast
soundings, after adjusting dew points, continue to show a few
hundred J/kg of mean layer CAPE for Thursday. It seems that the
low level jet will keep most of the activity during this time to
the west and north. The models have trended a bit drier during
this time.
For now, continued PoPs for showers and thunderstorms during this
period, highest in the western portions of the area. Temperatures
will remain near seasonal normals, with onshore winds near the
lake.
.THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.
Models are in general agreement with the main 500 mb shortwave
trough sliding eastward across the region Thursday night. A weak
cold front also slides east through the region. Continued PoPs for
showers and thunderstorms during this time.
The GFS and Canadian models are showing the 500 mb low slowly
deepening Friday into early next week, as it slowly moves to the
east across the Great Lakes region. The ECMWF is keeping more of
an elongated shortwave trough over the region during this time.
Despite the differences between the models, there would likely be
several vorticity maxima rotating through the area during this
period. This should continue periodic chances for showers and
thunderstorms during this time. Temperatures still look to remain
near seasonal normals.
