.UPDATE...A Hurricane Warning continues in effects for Puerto
Rico, Vieques, Culebra and the U.S. Virgin Islands. As of 8 AM,
Category 5 Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 16.7 North,
longitude 57.7 West and moving west near 14 mph. Irma is currently
a category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 175 mph. Latest
track from the National Hurricane Center has Irma approaching the
local islands by Wednesday morning. Interests across all local
islands should closely monitor the progress of this life
threatening and catastrophic hurricane.
For the this afternoon scattered to locally numerous showers and
isolated thunderstorms with gusty winds are expected mainly over
the interior and southwestern sections of Puerto Rico. External
rain bands associated to Irma are expected to gradually increase
through the evening and overnight hours. Tropical force winds are
possible over most portions of the forecast area by Wednesday
morning. Hurricane conditions will follow through Wednesday
afternoon and dangerous winds and flooding rains are possible
through early Thursday morning. Regardless of the forecast track,
weather conditions will deteriorate very quickly and preparations
to protect life and property should be rushed to completion. Life
threatening conditions are expected due to dangerous winds and
flooding from rainfall accumulations of 5 to 6 inches and higher
isolated amounts of 12 inches or higher. Mudslides in areas of
steep terrain are also possible. Please refer to the Hurricane

potential impacts of Hurricane Irma over Puerto Rico and the U.S.
Virgin Islands.
Extremely dangerous marine conditions with life threatening
conditions across the coastal areas of the islands are expected
through late Thursday. Please refer to the latest Coastal Waters
Forecast issued by the National Weather Service WFO San Juan for
the latest updates and information.

.AVIATION...TSRA expected between 05/16-22z across the interior
and SW quadrant of PR, leading to tempo MVFR conds at TJPS/TJMZ.
Late in the fcst period, SHRA/TSRA will gradually increase as Irma
moves closer to the northeastern Caribbean, impacting the rest of
the terminals at times. Gusty winds and MVFR conds expected at
TKPK/TNCM after 16z. Latest 05/06z TJSJ upper air sounding
indicated ENE winds at 5-17 kts below FL100.

.MARINE...Marine conditions will gradually become extremely
dangerous as Hurricane Irma approaches and passes through the
local Atlantic waters. 40 foot seas are possible there. While Irma
is in or very near the forecast area, noon Wednesday through noon
Thursday, successful passage through the outer Atlantic waters
will be highly unlikely. Seas will fall briefly below 7 feet on
Friday but the next tropical system passing northeast of the area
will raise seas above 10 feet by Saturday.

SYNOPSIS...Isolated showers were observed overnight as one of the
outermost rain bands from Category 4 Hurricane Irma entered the
forecast area and moved toward the U.S. Virgin Islands. Hurricane
Irma will move into the forecast area midday Wednesday with
powerful and destructive winds and very heavy rain. The hurricane
will begin to move away from the local islands on Thursday with
improving weather thereafter, although scattered showers will
continue.
SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday...
..Hurricane warning in effect for PR and the USVI...
Extremely dangerous Hurricane Irma is currently approaching the
Leeward islands. Based on the latest forecast track, the center of
Irma is expected to move just to the northeast of the islands on
Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday morning. However,
external rain bands associated with Irma are expected to move
through the area from time to time today and gradually increase
overnight into Wednesday morning. Tropical storm force winds are
forecast to arrive on Wednesday morning and Hurricane conditions
should follow later during the afternoon hours.
Regardless of the forecast track, weather conditions will
deteriorate very quickly and preparations to protect life and
property should be rushed to completion. Life threatening conditions
are expected due to dangerous winds and flooding from rainfall
accumulations of 4 to 8 inches and higher isolated amounts of 12
inches or higher. Mudslides in areas of steep terrain are also
possible. Please refer to the Hurricane Local Statement (HLSSJU) for
the latest information of the potential impacts of Hurricane Irma
over Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
LONG TERM...Friday through Monday...
On Friday the final rainbands from departing major hurricane Irma
will cross over Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, bringing
more showers and thunderstorms. High pressure at upper levels
will continue to envelop the area as a tropical wave in the
Atlantic now around 10 north and 36.5 west develops into a
tropical system and curves to the northwest just in time to pass
on the other side of 20 north and 60 west from us on Saturday.
Sunday and Monday will also be somewhat drier as subsidence
between the two rain bands from Irma and the next tropical system
reduces convection. Current models show considerable tropical
moisture now returning the following Tuesday into Wednesday.
AVIATION...VFR thru at least 16z across the PR/USVI terminals.
However, SHRA over the Atlantic waters can result in brief periods
of -RA/VCSH across most of the terminals. TSRA expected between
05/16-22z across the interior and SW quadrant of PR, leading to
tempo MVFR conds at TJPS/TJMZ. Late in the fcst period, SHRA/TSRA
will gradually increase as Irma moves closer to the northeastern
Caribbean, impacting the rest of the terminals at times. Gusty
winds and MVFR conds expected at TKPK/TNCM after 16z. Latest

increased above 7 feet. Thereafter the marine conditions will

A 63-yr old fisherman died by a lightning strike. The man anchored his boat on the beach in Barrio Capitanejo at Juana Diaz, when a lightning struck on the water.
