.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure aloft over the southwest states will bring hot dry
weather for inland areas again today with mid level moisture
bringing a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms...mostly near
the mountains with dry lightning strikes and strong gusty winds
possible. For late tonight through Monday...an increase in lower
level moisture in the lower deserts will bring higher humidities
for inland areas with high temperatures returning to near to a
little below average. The slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms
will continue near the mountains into Monday. Drying aloft and
increasing onshore flow will bring cooling to near average for
Tuesday through Thursday with more night and morning coastal low
clouds. High pressure to the east will strengthen late next week
bringing warming going into next weekend.

.SHORT TERM (Today through Monday)...
High pressure centered over Utah will continue the hot weather
away from the coast today. Mid level moisture centered around 600
mb will continue the slight chance of thunderstorms near the
mountains this afternoon with dry lightning strikes and strong
gusty winds possible. Any rainfall is once again expected to be
limited.
For late tonight into Sunday...an inverted trough moving westward
into Southern California will increase the amount and depth of mid
level moisture some with some increase in higher level moisture
as well. Model guidance shows the potential for a gulf surge
increasing lower level moisture late tonight into Sunday morning
in the lower deserts with dewpoints climbing into the lower to
mid 70s. This moisture remains in place into Monday before
stronger onshore flow brings drying for late Monday into Monday
night. The increase in mid and high level moisture will bring more
clouds for late tonight into Sunday with a few light showers or
sprinkles possible late tonight into Sunday morning.
The combination of more cloud cover...greater low level moisture
in the lower deserts...and weakening of the high pressure is
expected to bring cooling of high temperatures to near to slightly
below average on Sunday for inland areas.
Southern California is stratus-free early this morning. The higher
resolution models do develop a coastal eddy tonight with some
stratus return possible near the coast...subject to some
disruption from the increasing mid level moisture. Patchy stratus
will continue near the coast for late Sunday night into Monday
morning.
For Sunday afternoon...the rainfall potential is a little greater
for any thunderstorms that develop near the mountain as the depth
of the mid level moisture expands. The slight chance of afternoon
thunderstorms near the mountains will continue on Monday.

.LONG TERM (Tuesday through Friday)...
A weak trough of low pressure near the West Coast will bring drier
southwest flow aloft with high temperatures returning to near
average for Tuesday through Thursday. An increase in coverage of
overnight stratus is expected with the stratus extending inland
into the western valleys at times. Warming is expected to resume
late in the week into next weekend as high pressure aloft
strengthens over the Great Basin.

with unrestricted VIS through this evening.
Mountains/Deserts...Sct-Bkn clouds AOA FL100 with isolated
thunderstorms along the higher terrain 20Z-02Z with tops to FL350.
The stronger cells will contain strong up/downdrafts and locally
gusty surface winds.

No hazardous marine weather is expected through Wednesday.

.BEACHES...
A long-period southerly swell will build on Saturday, and peak on
Sunday at 3-4 FT from 180 degrees. A second will follow Monday,
peaking Tuesday at 5-6 FT. Elevated surf is expected through next
week as additional southerly swells from Tropical Cyclone Eugene
enter the mix by midweek. Surf of 4, to occasionally 6-7 FT is
expected through Wednesday, then 3-5 FT into Friday with the largest
sets north of Del Mar. All beaches may experience strong rip and/or
longshore currents at times through next week due to these swells. A
Beach Hazard Statement is in effect highlighting the hazard,
especially for inexperienced swimmers.

Mid level moisture will continue the slight chance of
thunderstorms near the mountains this afternoon with dry lightning
strikes and strong gusty winds possible. Rainfall is expected to
be limited. Moisture will increase some for Sunday with slightly
greater potential for wetting rainfall from afternoon
thunderstorms.

Huntington Beach Lifeguards rescued 200 plus people from rip currents over the weekend. Strong rip currents continued into the workweek, but rescue numbers are unavailable.
South facing beaches were impacted by elevated surf over a period of 5 days. Huntington Beach Lifeguards reported sets to 7 ft over the 5 day period. Surf peaked on the 12th with 10 ft sets. Newport Beach also reported sets to 7 ft.
Northern San Diego County saw high surf along south facing beaches, sets to 8 ft were reported at Trestles.
