Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 854 PM PDT TUE AUG 16 2016 .SYNOPSIS...Slight chances for thunderstorms will continue in Mohave County through the week, and also pop up in the Sierra and nearby mountains Thursday as a weak disturbance moves through. Expect dry conditions for most of the rest of the area, with temperatures coming down a degree or two each day through Friday. && .UPDATE...Smoke from the Bluecut Fire near Cajon Pass could be seen spreading toward southern Nevada on satellite loops and surface observations prior to sunset. The plume was generally aloft over San Bernardino county this evening but there should be some settling toward the surface overnight into Wednesday morning leading to areas of smoke across San Bernardino and Clark Counties. The weather grids were updated with a general depiction of potential surface smoke tonight through Wednesday. This will be fine tuned as the latest HRRR smoke forecast becomes available. -Adair && .PREV DISCUSSION... 200 PM PDT TUE AUG 16 2016 .SHORT TERM...Through Friday night. For today, our area is under weak shortwave ridging between an upper level low over the Four Corners region and a smaller disturbance over northern California approaching Reno. Cloud development has been confined to northern Lincoln and eastern Mohave County, with few if any showers under the clouds. Another feature of note is the rapidly growing BlueCut Fire in the Cajon Pass, which will send smoke into the skies above Barstow this afternoon and evening. For tomorrow, the disturbance nearing Reno will move south into our western zones, cut off from the main flow, and sort of meander around through Thursday. This will lead to slight thunderstorm chances over the Sierra and nearby mountains, while slight chances also continue in Mohave County where better moisture remains in place. On Friday, the disturbance retreats slowly offshore, reducing thunderstorm chances for the Sierra region, and moisture also retreats a bit in Mohave County, with thunderstorm chances decreasing there as well. Through the period, under the influence of slowly falling heights aloft, surface temperatures will also drop a degree or two each day. This will bring most areas back to near mid-August normals on Friday. .Long Term...Saturday through Tuesday. Uncertainty remains in the details of the evolving weather pattern for the extended period but in short, warm and generally dry conditions look to persist through at least the weekend. The flow pattern will be more reminiscent of the cooler season with a shortwave moving through the Northern Rockies inducing a northerly flow down to the Great Basin. Meanwhile a weak low will begin to form off the southern California coast but with the monsoon high suppressed fairly far south, moisture advection into the region is minimal. This low will then track east into either the Southwest or across Northern Mexico, and may enhance thunderstorm potential next week but uncertainty is pretty high still. As such, ive maintained a mostly dry forecast but boosted mountain PoPs into the slight chance category monday onward for eastern portions of our area. Temperatures will hover near to slightly above normal for late August. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Weather conditions for the next 24 hours will favor diurnal trends with breezy southwest winds the afternoon, south drainage winds at night, and easterly winds during the mid morning. Wednesdays outlook is very similar to what was observed today. Dry conditions expected with minimal cloud cover. Peak southwesterly gusts in the afternoons will be near 20 knots. For the rest of southern Nevada...northwest Arizona...and southeast California...Dry conditions with winds favoring diurnal trends expected. Strongest winds will be found across the Western Mojave desert near KDAG where afternoon and evening gusts may exceed 25 knots. && .FIRE WEATHER...Hot and dry conditions continue. Expect afternoon relative humidities to drop below 10 percent with southwest gusts around 20 to 25 mph across the Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin with slightly more moist conditions lingering in Arizona. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotter activation is not anticipated.
