Tornadoes and Flash Flooding in Iowa, June 30, 2014

A trained spotter reports hail up to egg size or larger two or three miles south of Sac City.

Trained spotter said hail lasted about 10 minutes. Hail started as pea size and fell for several minutes before growing to size of quarters. This larger hail fell for 3 to 4 minutes.

Windshields broken in cars across Rockwell City.

Ping-Pong size hail reported.

Multiple tree limbs down by winds estimated between 60 and 70 MPH.

Hail up to baseball size fell throughout town.

Odeboldt Fire reported golf ball size hail south of town.

Fire department reported estimated winds between 60 and 70 mph in Odebolt.

Spotter estimated winds of 70 MPH.

Rainfall of 1.13 inches in the past 45 minutes.

Damage was reported at the Littlefield Recreation Area.

Up to tennis ball size hail just south of town.

Boone County EM reports golf ball size hail with tree branches coming down in strong winds.

Up to baseball size hail across town with tree damage from strong winds.

Large hail and severe winds combined to produce damage to crop and houses. A semi was blown over on Interstate 80 near mile marker 71 by the strong winds. The wind driven hail stripped crops across the far northeast corner of the county.

Massive hail and wind storm crossed across southern portions of Guthrie county. Hail as large as baseballs and winds of up to 70 mph produced widespread damage to houses, buildings and crops.

Emergency manager reported around 190 homes in Adair were damaged by large hail driven by strong to severe wind. Numerous trees were damaged. Crops shredded by the wind driven hail. Cars on I-80 had broken windows.

Tornado with intermittent southeastward track produced the worst damage near the end of its life.

Ping pong ball size hail and severe winds combined to shred siding and crops and break windows across the area.

Numerous 40 to 50 foot trees down in Zearing.

This is a multiple segment tornado with three segments that passed through portions of Story, Marshall and Hardin counties. This is the first segment in Story county. This longer track tornado formed about a mile and a half east of Zearing where a farmstead sustained roof damage to multiple buildings. The relatively narrow tornado continued to the NE, with RFD winds destroying 6 grain bins and an outbuilding just south of the track. The tornado then passed into Marshall county.

Measured by home weather station. Two large ash trees snapped. Pine tree snapped with corn and soy beans flattened.

This is a multiple segment tornado with three segments that passed through portions of Story, Marshall and Hardin counties. This is the second segment in Marshall county. After turning to the east and entering Marshall County, the tornado rapidly widened and intensified just after crossing County Highway S57. Severe damage occurred to a 500 yard wide stretch of trees along Minerva Creek along and north of 120th St. (part of the damage was likely attributable to RFD). The tornado continued east just north of 120th St. and completely destroyed a farm outbuilding, depositing the remnants of the building in the surrounding trees to the north and east. Very strong RFD winds caused widespread tree and building damage for over a mile south of the tornado path along this section of the track. Turning northeast, the tornado tracked across open farmland for the next 2.5 miles, grazing one farmstead in the process. The narrowing tornado directly hit a farmstead south of the 105th St. and Fariman Ave. intersection, with mostly low EF1 tree damage sustained. The tornado then continued into Hardin county.

Large tree snapped off.

Narrow corridor of wind damage that extended from three miles N of Winterset to 6 miles NE of Winterset. Worst damage was to three grain bins that were tipped, otherwise damage was to trees.

A brief tornado touchdown with several trees damaged.

Narrow but strong RFD west and south of the beginning of a tornado track. Damage path started just west of the tornado track and then shifted south of the track. Over a dozen trees were uprooted and many more had limb damage. A few very small and old farm outbuildings were destroyed. Path of damage was just under three miles long and 1/2 of a mile wide, though the worst damage corridor was 100-150 yards wide. Point for Storm Data is in the area of strongest damage.

The tornado touched down NW of Patterson where an RFD surge was located and a curling motion noted in the damage patterns just upstream of the start point. The tornado proceeded to damage several small groves of trees over the next 1.9 miles. Here the tornado strengthened to EF1 where it snapped or uprooted several hundred trees. The path was often sporadic, owing likely to the hilly terrain of the area. The worst damage occurred to a home 2.5 miles NW of Bevington, which had the detached garage roof fail and take out part of the house roof as well. Roof and siding damage was noted to 5 homes.

This is a multiple segment tornado with two segments that passed through portions of Marshall and Hardin counties. This is the first segment in Marshall county. As the first tornado from this supercell began to occlude and pull NE, a second tornado appears to have formed a mile to the south and east. A path of more intense damage was noted on a survey that began just north of Marble Road between Eastman and Fredrick Ave. The tornado grazed three farmsteads, causing mostly tree and some outbuilding damage. As the tornado moved into an area with more trees around mile three of its path, convergent wind patterns were noted on the ground survey to the north and south of the track, with a 100-150 yard wide path through a line of trees along a creek east of U Ave. After crossing Ingram Ave, the tornado caused roof damage to at least one outbuilding. The tornado then moved in Hardin county.

Medium size tree limb damage reported.

Broad area of inflow winds north of the tornado. Damage was mostly to large tree limbs. Damage first noted near county road G4R and Settlers Ave and grew narrower and more intense as it approached the tornado. Area of strongest damage denoted by Storm Data point.

This is a multiple segment tornado with three segments that passed through portions of Story, Marshall and Hardin counties. This is the third and final segment in Hardin county. The tornado cycled, made a hard right turn, and began to intensify again after crossing into Hardin County. EF1 damage was sustained to wooden power poles and trees along 335th St. between T and U Ave. Turning NE again after crossing U Ave, the tornado roamed through open farmland and weakened, only causing intermittent tree damage after crossing County Road S62 1.5 miles south of Union. The tornado dissipated shortly before reaching the Iowa River.

Very narrow but intense RFD south of the tornado path. Damage path only about a mile long and 100-150 yards wide before it wraps into the tornado. Divergent wind pattern throughout with dozens of trees snapped and uprooted. One house sustained roof and siding damage.

This was a multiple segment tornado with two segment including portions of Marshall and Hardin counties. This is the second and final segment in Hardin county. After crossing into Hardin county, the narrowing tornado left a highly convergent tree damage pattern across 335th St. The path washed out in a pasture NE of this point just west of the Iowa River.

Minor roof damage to a house and warehouse as the tornado dissipated.

Continuation of wind damage from the dissipated tornado. Damage to tree limbs with some smaller trees uprooted along the Interstate. Damage lessened by about a mile east of the county border.

This tornado formed north of Martensdale and quickly tracked to the SE, reaching its widest and strongest point just east of the city where it damaged dozens of trees. The surface circulation weakened as it ascended a 100 foot high ridge south of the Middle River and then dissipated about a half mile south of the ridge crest.

Swath of winds downstream of a dissipating tornado. Worst damage was at the beginning, where an outbuilding was very heavily damaged and debris thrown east across a road. The damage intensity lessened and the path broadened within a few miles SE of the start point.

Six inches or more of water was moving rapidly in areas that are not typical. Two and one half inches of rain fell in 45 minutes. The Little Beaver Creek was out of its banks.

The Black Hawk County EM reported tree and crop damage.

Grundy County Law Enforcement reports numerous creeks have risen out of their banks with several roads under water through the county.
