What happened

A fire charred 1022 acres of brush near Kaaulalu Bay in the Kau District in the southern part of the Big Island of Hawaii. The blaze began in the afternoon of the 1st, and was finally under control and contained in the afternoon of the 4th.

Persistent trade winds in the initial phase of the fire caused it to spread rapidly, but weather conditions became more favorable, with occasional rain and less wind, later on the 1st, and then through the 4th. No significant injuries or property damage were reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

TRADE WINDS WILL STRENGTHEN STARTING TUESDAY...BRINGING MORE
COMFORTABLE CONDITIONS WITH SHOWERS FOCUSED OVER WINDWARD AREAS.

SURFACE ANALYSES AND SATELLITE LOOPS SHOW A SURFACE RIDGE RUNNING
FROM A HIGH FAR NORTH NORTHEAST OF THE AREA NEAR 47N144W TO ABOUT
140 MILES NORTHWEST OF KAUAI. THE RIDGE IS MAINTAINING MODERATE TO
LOCALLY FRESH EASTERLY TRADE WINDS OVER THE ISLANDS. THE TRADE WINDS
ARE PUSHING SHOWERY LOW CLOUDS OVER THE WINDWARD SIDES OF THE BIG
ISLAND AND MAUI.

SURFACE ANALYSES SHOW A WEAK FRONT 350 MILES NORTHWEST OF KAUAI AND
A WEAK TROUGH 350 MILES WEST NORTHWEST OF KAUAI. THESE FEATURES WILL
MOVE SOUTHEAST SLOWLY AND MERGE AS A TROUGH OVER THE NEXT 24 HOURS.
OVER THE NEXT 36 HOURS THE TROUGH WILL MOVE SOUTHEAST SLOWLY. AS THE
TROUGH APPROACHES THE WINDS OVER THE ISLANDS WILL WEAKEN. GENTLE TO
MODERATE TRADE WINDS WILL PERSIST NEAR THE BIG ISLAND BUT THE WINDS
WILL BECOME LIGHT ENOUGH OVER THE SMALLER ISLANDS TO ALLOW DAYTIME
SEA BREEZES AND NIGHTTIME LAND BREEZES TO BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD.
THE SEA BREEZES WILL BRING AN INCREASE IN AFTERNOON CLOUDS AND
SHOWERS OVER INTERIOR AND LEEWARD AREAS THROUGH MONDAY.

THE TROUGH WILL LIFT NORTH AND WEAKEN TUESDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE
RE-BUILDS NORTH OF THE AREA. STRONGER TRADE WINDS WILL SPREAD BACK
OVER THE ISLANDS STARTING TUESDAY NIGHT. TRADE WINDS WILL BECOME
LOCALLY BREEZY ON WEDNESDAY. THE TRADES WILL BRING MORE LESS HUMID
CONDITIONS TO THE ISLANDS WITH SHOWERS AGAIN FOCUSED OVER WINDWARD
SLOPES AND FEWER CLOUDS AND SHOWERS OVER LEEWARD AREAS DURING THE
AFTERNOONS. TRADE WINDS WILL PERSIST THROUGH NEXT WEEKEND.

EMBEDDED SHOWERS. VFR CONDITIONS WILL PREVAIL AT THE TERMINALS TODAY
WITH BRIEF MVFR CONDITIONS IN PASSING TRADE SHOWERS...ESPECIALLY FOR
WINDWARD AND MOUNTAIN AREAS. AIRMET SIERRA FOR MOUNTAIN OBSCURATION
MAY BE NEEDED AT TIMES THROUGH MONDAY.

TRADE WINDS WILL WEAKEN TODAY BUT SOME 20 KT WINDS WILL LINGER OVER
THE ALENUIHAHA CHANNEL...ALONG THE HAMAKUA COASTAL WATERS...AND THE
NEAR-SHORE WINDWARD WATERS OF MAUI AND MOLOKAI.

SURF ALONG THE EAST SHORES WILL DROP THIS WEEKEND AS TRADE WINDS
WEAKEN. A SMALL SOUTH SWELL WILL FILL IN TODAY AND MONDAY...THEN
DECLINE THROUGH MIDWEEK. A NEW SMALL SOUTH SWELL IS EXPECTED NEXT
WEEKEND.
