What happened

The episode as NWS FWD wrote it up.

Drought conditions improved across all of North Texas during the month of January. At the beginning of the month, exceptional drought (D4) was ongoing across Hamilton, Somervell, and Bosque County. By the end of the month, conditions improved for these locations to severe (D2) or extreme (D3) drought. Many counties across the southeastern potions of the CWA were able to end the month out of severe drought after four to six inches of rain fell across this area. However, the northwestern and central portions of the CWA saw little change in drought status and remained in severe or exceptional drought categories.

.UPDATE...

WENT AHEAD AND CANCELLED THE DENSE FOG ADVISORY THAT WAS IN EFFECT
FOR LOCATIONS GENERALLY ALONG AND WEST OF THE INTERSTATE 35
CORRIDOR AND SOUTH OF THE INTERSTATE 20 CORRIDOR. THE PRIMARY
REASON FOR THIS IS BECAUSE NORTH WINDS HAVE PICKED UP TO 5 TO 10
MPH ACROSS THE DENSE FOG ADVISORY AREA...AND VISIBILITIES IMPROVED
RAPIDLY AS A RESULT. ANY AREAS THAT REMAIN SHELTERED FROM NORTH
WINDS...ESPECIALLY LOW-LYING AREAS MAY CONTINUE TO SEE DENSE FOG
THROUGH SUNRISE. LEFT PATCHY DENSE FOG IN THE FORECAST AS A
RESULT...BUT LOW VISIBILITIES ARE NOT EXPECTED TO BE A WIDESPREAD
PROBLEM ANYMORE TONIGHT. WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH FOR ANY DRAMATIC
CHANGE IN WIND SPEED...HOWEVER WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN UP IN
THE 5 TO 10 MPH RANGE AFTER MIDNIGHT AS A COLD FRONT CONTINUES TO
SLIDE SOUTH THROUGH NORTH AND CENTRAL TX.

.AVIATION...
/6Z TAFS/

CIGS/VIS TRENDS HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THE MAP TONIGHT RANGING FROM
LIFR IN FOG TO VFR IN SOME AREAS. WILL KEEP THE GENERAL TREND OF
IMPROVING CONDITIONS WITH PREVAILING MVFR CIGS/VIS THROUGH MUCH OF
THE NIGHT AS WINDS MIX OUT THE FOG A BIT AND SLIGHTLY DRIER AIR
MOVES IN BEHIND A COLD FRONT. IFR/LIFR CONDITIONS ARE STILL PREVAILING
IN AREAS OF RAIN TO THE SOUTHEAST OF THE MAJOR TERMINALS. COLDER
AIR IS JUST NOW ENTERING NORTH TEXAS AND WINDS WILL INCREASE
ACROSS THE AREA SOMETIME AFTER 9Z. THIS SHOULD ALLOW THE CIGS TO
IMPROVE AREAWIDE INTO MVFR CATEGORY. THINK MVFR CIGS WILL LINGER
INTO MUCH OF TUESDAY...WITH STEADY IMPROVEMENT THROUGH THE DAY.
VFR CONDITIONS EXPECTED TOMORROW AFTERNOON WITH NORTHWEST WINDS.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 310 PM CST MON DEC 31 2012/
SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS A DRYLINE/WARM FRONT HAS MOVED INTO A FEW
OF OUR FAR WEST COUNTIES THIS AFTERNOON WHERE TEMPERATURES HAVE
WARMED INTO THE MID 50S. BRECKENRIDGE RECENTLY REACHED 63 DEGREES
UNDER MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES. THE CLOUDS HAVE BEEN BREAKING UP OVER
THE WEST AND NORTHWEST COUNTIES FOR A FEW HOURS NOW...AND THE FOG
IN THIS AREA HAS DISSIPATED AS A RESULT. ELSEWHERE...FOG REMAINED
ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION...ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE SOUTHEASTERN
HALF OF THE REGION WHERE DENSE CLOUD COVER AND RAIN CONTINUES. A
SECOND WARM FRONT HAS ALSO MOVED INTO OUR SOUTHEASTERN COUNTIES...
ROUGHLY FROM CAMERON TO PALESTINE OR JUST NORTH OF THERE.
ACCORDING TO THE RAP...THIS FRONT IS NOT EXPECTED TO MAKE MUCH
MORE NORTHERLY PROGRESS AND WILL BE SWEPT BACK TO THE SOUTHEAST
AROUND SUNSET.

REGIONAL RADAR SHOWS THE LIGHT RAIN/SHOWERS HAVE SLOWLY BEEN
MOVING EAST TODAY AND THE RADAR IS FINALLY STARTING TO FILL IN
OVER THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHEASTERN COUNTIES. THE RAIN SHOULD END IN
THE NORTHEAST THIS EVENING BUT WILL CONTINUE OVER OUR SOUTHEASTERN
COUNTIES FOR MUCH OF THE NIGHT. THERE IS A SMALL THREAT FOR
ISOLATED THUNDER THIS EVENING AND KEPT THE ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM
WORDING IN THE FAR SOUTHEAST. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL TOTALS WILL NOT
BE VERY HIGH WITH AMOUNTS GENERALLY BELOW A QUARTER OF AN INCH.
EVEN THOUGH THE RAIN WILL END ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION THIS
AFTERNOON AND EVENING...FOG WILL CONTINUE OR REDEVELOP ACROSS MUCH
OF THE REGION AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT. LOWEST VISIBILITY
RESTRICTIONS WILL STILL BE OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN COUNTIES WHERE
THE RAIN AND HIGHEST MOISTURE WILL BE. THE ONLY LOCATIONS THAT
WILL LIKELY NOT SEE FOG TONIGHT WILL BE THE FAR WESTERN COUNTIES
BEHIND THE WARM FRONT.

A COLD FRONT THAT IS CURRENTLY MOVING INTO THE TEXAS PANHANDLE AND
NORTHERN OKLAHOMA WILL CROSS THE RED RIVER AROUND MIDNIGHT AND
CONTINUE ADVANCING SOUTHEAST. THE FRONT WILL EXIT OUR CWA DURING
THE MORNING HOURS ON TUESDAY...PUSHING ANY REMAINING RAIN IN THE
SOUTHEAST COUNTIES INTO SOUTHEAST TEXAS WITH IT. CLOUDY SKIES WILL
PREVAIL FOR MUCH OF THE DAY TOMORROW AND TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE
FROM THE UPPER 30S TO LOWER 50S MONDAY AFTERNOON.

POSITIVELY-TILTED UPPER LEVEL TROUGHING WILL CONTINUE OVER THE
PLAINS THROUGH THE WEEKEND. THIS WILL KEEP NORTHERLY FLOW IN THE
LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE OVER NORTH AND CENTRAL TEXAS FOR
SEVERAL DAYS. EVEN THOUGH A FEW UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCES WILL
GRAZE THE REGION...MOISTURE WILL BE TOO SCANT FOR ANY ADDITIONAL
PRECIPITATION AFTER TOMORROW. THE TROUGHING AND NORTHERLY FLOW
WILL ALLOW FOR ANOTHER FRONT TO ARRIVE THURSDAY...FOLLOWED BY
ANOTHER ONE OVER THE WEEKEND. THIS WILL HELP KEEP TEMPERATURES ON
THE COOL SIDE FOR MUCH OF THE WEEK. OVERNIGHT LOWS WILL GENERALLY
RUN NEAR OR BELOW FREEZING THROUGH THE WEEKEND AND DAYTIME HIGHS
WILL BE IN THE 40S AND LOWER 50S. WE WILL SEE A SLIGHT WARM-UP
STARTING EARLY NEXT WEEK AS THE UPPER LEVEL TROUGH IS REPLACED BY
UPPER LEVEL RIDGING AND SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST WINDS RETURN IN THE
LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE.
