Exceptional (D4) drought conditions spread northward and eastward into Willacy County and extreme southern portions of the King Ranch (Kenedy County) during the third week of June. Helpful rains arrived on the 22nd and 23rd, particularly in Willacy County, and would slowly begin to improve the drought situation. In Willacy County, just under $500 thousand in damage to cotton, corn, and sorghum (all dryland) was reported by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, a result of the long period of hot, breezy to windy, and dry weather across the region.

Extreme (D3) Drought covered the northern four-fifths of Kenedy County during the third week of June, with Exceptional (D4) conditions reaching into the county from the south, northward to Norias/Rudolph. Some relief, in the form of 2 to 4 inches of rain from scattered to numerous thunderstorms, would dial the drought back to close the month.
Ranch moisture remained very short through the peak of the drought, and impact on low quality/dwindling feed supplies forced owners to sell off [# of] head of cattle much earlier in the year than normal. Dryland crops [if known] withered under the hot sunshine and breezy to windy days, with little if any dew recovery overnight.

Immediately after the designation, some relief, in the form of 2 to 6 inches of rain from numerous thunderstorms, would dial the drought back to close out the month. Ranch moisture remained very short through the peak of the drought, and impact on low quality/dwindling feed supplies forced owners to sell off an unknown number of head of cattle much earlier in the year than normal.
The Texas AgriLife Extension Service reported insured crop losses to cotton, corn, and sorghum added up to $430,811, which was a small portion of much greater loss across the remainder of the Rio Grande Valley, by the peak of the drought in late June.
