LIGHT EASTERLY FLOW WILL ALLOW DAYTIME SEA BREEZES TO PRODUCE AFTERNOON CLOUDS AND SHOWERS OVER THE ISLANDS. SKIES WILL CLEAR OVERNIGHT AND LAND BREEZES WILL BRING COOLER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES. LIGHT TO MODERATE TRADE WINDS RETURN FRIDAY AND CONTINUE OVER THE WEEKEND. && .DISCUSSION... CLOUDS HAVE BUILT UP THROUGH THE DAY OVER THE ISLANDS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF WINDWARD OAHU AND MAUI COUNTY WHERE THE LIGHT EASTERLY FLOW HAS PUSHED CLOUDS FORMING OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN TOWARD LEEWARD AREAS. THE AFTERNOON SOUNDINGS SHOW THE TEMPERATURE INVERSION NEAR 9 THOUSAND FEET...AND SATELLITE IMAGERY CONFIRMS THAT THE SUMMITS OF THE BIG ISLAND AND HALEAKALA REMAIN CLEAR WHILE CLOUDS BUILD UP BELOW THE SUMMITS. SHOWERS AND CLOUDS WILL DIMINISH AGAIN TONIGHT AS THE LAND COOLS AND THE LIFT PROVIDED BY THE DAYTIME HEATING DISAPPEARS. IN THE CURRENT SEA BREEZE CONVECTIVE PATTERN...AFTERNOON CLOUD COVER OVER THE SMALLER-ISLAND LEEWARD AREAS WILL KEEP HIGH TEMPERATURES A FEW DEGREES BELOW AVERAGE. ALTHOUGH...INCREASED HUMIDITY WILL MAKE THE SLIGHT DECREASE IN TEMPERATURE HARDLY NOTICEABLE. WHILE AT NIGHT...DOWNSLOPE FLOW FROM HIGHER ELEVATIONS WILL KEEP LOW TEMPERATURES BELOW AVERAGE IN AREAS THAT EXPERIENCE DRAINAGE OR DOWNSLOPE FLOW. A FRONT TO THE NORTH HAS PUSHED THE SUBTROPICAL RIDGE CLOSE TO THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS AND IS THE CULPRIT FOR THE LIGHT WINDS AROUND THE STATE. THE RIDGE IS 100 MILES NORTH OF KAUAI AND IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN PLACE THROUGH THURSDAY BEFORE STARTING A SLOW RETREAT TO THE NORTH THURSDAY NIGHT. THE LATEST MODEL RUNS SHOW TRADE WINDS ATTEMPTING A RETURN FRIDAY...WITH MODERATE TRADES FILTERING IN OVER THE BIG ISLAND AND MAUI...AND LIGHT TRADES OVER THE REST OF THE STATE.
