An unusually active northwest flow was present across the eastern U.S. on the east side of a strong subtropical ridge anchored in the southwest U.S. A weak stationary front was draped across west central and central Georgia. A strong disturbance near the Great Lakes was tracking through the flow. A very warm, moist, and unstable atmosphere was in place across Georgia. The strong disturbance moving through the area combined with the unstable atmosphere and the weak stationary front to provide for widespread strong to severe thunderstorms. During the initial development phase of this event, through the afternoon and early evening, the primary form of severe weather was in the form of large hail. As the evening progressed, the convective activity took on an increasingly linear organization producing significant and widespread damaging straight-line winds. The main focus of the activity was across the northeast half of the state. While the activity diminished overnight, it redeveloped on the 16th in two waves. One round of isolated severe thunderstorms affected the west central part of the state during the mid-morning hours, while another round of isolated severe thunderstorms affected the south central and southeast parts of Middle Georgia during the early evening.
This was the second consecutive year where June 15th turned out to be one of the most significant severe weather days of the summer.

The Walker County 911 Center reported quarter-sized hail from the Rossville area.
A trained storm spotter observed quarter-sized hail in the far northwestern part of Catoosa county near the Tennessee state line, then observed nickel-sized hail toward the northeastern part of the county northeast of Ringgold.
The public observed quarter-sized hail just northwest of Rising Fawn. WSR-88D suggests that similar-sized hail to nickel-sized hail likely continued to just east of Rising Fawn.
The public observed penny-sized hail near LaFayette. WSR-88D radar data suggests that hail of this size, most likely larger, affected areas near and just east of Lafayette to just north of Naomi. However, there were no reports of any hail larger than pennies.
The public observed half-dollar-sized hail in the far western part of the county near Etna and the Alabama state line, while quarter-sized hail was observed near Cedartown. WSR-88D radar data suggests that hail near quarter, perhaps larger, continued east to east-southeast of Cedartown toward Antioch and Van Wert.
A trained storm spotter observed half-dollar-sized hail in extreme northeast Paulding county near Cross Roads and the Cobb county line. The hail continued into northwest and west central Cobb county, south and southwest of Acworth.
Several reports of quarter to half-dollar-sized hail were received from the public across western and central Cobb county from southwest of Acworth, along the Paulding county line, to south of Kennesaw, and to just northwest of Marietta.
The public observed quarter-sized hail near Cumming.
The Forsyth County 911 Center reported that up to 20 trees and from 15 to 20 power lines were down across the southern half of the county, especially in and around Cumming.
The Forsyth County 911 Center reported that at least three house fires across the southern half of the county were the result of lightning strikes. No further details regarding the extent of damage was provided. There were also several power transformer fires observed as well, although it was not clear whether these were the result of lightning strikes or wind.
The public observed golf ball-sized hail in the eastern part of Paulding county near Hiram and a cooperative observer reported quarter-sized hail near New Hope. This was the second severe thunderstorm to move across Paulding county this evening. WSR-88D radar data strongly suggested that hail of quarter-size or larger likely impacted a large portion of the county from Yorkville to Hiram.
The public observed quarter-sized hail around Villa Rica in extreme northeast Carroll county.
Several reports of large damaging hail were received from across the northern half of Douglas county. The public observed baseball-sized hail in Douglasville. An amateur radio operator relayed a report of golf ball-sized hail in the northwest part of the county, near Winston. The public observed half-dollar-sized hail in the eastern part of the county near Lithia Springs.
The Gwinnett County 911 Center reported that a number of trees were down across the county. The damage was the result of two lines of severe thunderstorms that moved through the county, especially the southern half. The first line of severe thunderstorms tracked across much of the county between 642 pm EDT and 715 pm EDT, while the second line moved through mainly the southern part of the county between 725 pm EDT and 740 pm EDT.
The public observed quarter-sized hail in the western part of the county near Powder Springs. WSR-88D radar data suggests that hail of similar size likely continued to near Austell and Mableton.
The public observed quarter-sized hail southwest of Sandy Springs. WSR-88D radar data also suggested that hail of this size or larger likely also fell near Cascade Heights and East Point, but no hail reports were received from the public in this area.
The Polk County 911 Center reported golf ball-sized hail near Rockmart.
The Cherokee County Emergency Management Director and the Cherokee County 911 Center reported quarter-sized hail across the southern part of the county, south of Canton.
The public observed half-dollar-sized hail just south of Covington.
The Morgan County 911 Center reported that a few trees were down throughout the county. Power outages were noted in four different parts of the county.
The Cherokee County Emergency Management Director relayed a report of quarter-sized hail along the Bartow-Cherokee County line west of Sutallee. WSR-88D radar data indicated that the storm was actually more intense in eastern Bartow county before moving into western Cherokee county and dissipating.

The Bartow County 911 Center reported golf ball-sized hail near Cartersville and the public observed quarter-sized hail, also near Cartersville. The storm responsible for this hail tracked across the far southern part of the county near the Paulding and Cobb county lines to near Lake Allatoona.
The Jasper County 911 Center reported that many trees and power lines were down across the far northern portion of the county near the Morgan county line.
The public observed quarter-sized hail in the northwest part of the county near Kennesaw.
The Polk County 911 Center reported quarter-sized hail near Cedartown.
The Polk County 911 Center reported that several trees and power lines were down around Cedartown.
The Jefferson County 911 Center reported that at least six trees were down across the northern portion of the county, mainly near Wrens. The damage was caused by a thunderstorm outflow boundary as an area of thunderstorms moved into the county from the north.
The public reported that many trees and power lines were down across the county. One tree was down on a vehicle. Power outages were noted throughout much of the county. The wind damage was largely caused by an outflow boundary as an area of thunderstorms moved into the county from the north.
A CoCoRaHS observer reported penny to nickel-sized hail northwest of Walnut Grove. WSR-88D radar data does not support the initial quarter-sized hail reported with this storm.
The Johnson County Emergency Management Director reported that at least six trees and a couple of power lines were down from two separate areas of thunderstorms that moved across the county in the 1000 to 1030 pm EDT time frame. The first area affected was just south of Wrightsville, while the second area affected was near Scott.

The Johnson County Emergency Management Director reported that a well pump house was burned and the fire alarm system at a nursing home were disabled by a lightning strike.
The Paulding County 911 Center reported golf ball-sized hail near Hiram as yet another round of thunderstorms tracked across the county from west to east.
The Crawford County 911 Center reported that at least six trees were down across the county from strong thunderstorm outflow winds. Some power lines were also down. Trees were down on Jackson Road, Tribble Road, Zenith Mill Road, Charlotte Drive, and Knoxville Road.

The Peach County 911 Center reported that several trees were down across the county. The majority of the damage was caused by strong thunderstorm outflow winds well in advance of the actual thunderstorms.
Several reports of wind damage were received from the Houston County 911 Center. At least 15 trees were down from just south of Perry to the southern border of the county south of Elko. A large oak tree was also down in Kathleen.

The Macon County 911 Center reported that three trees were down within the county.
The Pulaski County 911 Center relayed reports of nickel to quarter-sized hail from the eastern part of the county, east of Hawkinsville.
The Montgomery County Emergency Management Director reported that two trees were down on Fire Tower Road, four miles west-northwest of Alston. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office reported that one tree was down near Higgston.
The public observed nickel-sized hail near Douglasville.
The Schley County 911 Center reported that three trees were down across the county.
The Cobb County Emergency Management Director reported that at least a dozen trees were down across the county, but especially in the Mableton area.
The Laurens County 911 Center reported that there were three to four trees and a couple of power lines down south of Dublin.
The Dooly County 911 Center reported that three trees were down within the county.
The Wheeler County Emergency Management Director reported that several trees were down across the county, but especially along Georgia Highway 19 just north of Jordan.
