Tornadoes and Flood in Virginia, June 4, 2008

An NWS survey concluded that a small EF-1 tornado touched down in Millwood within a larger area of straight-line wind damage. Maximum winds were estimated to be 90 mph. In the Carter Hall area of Millwood, nearly all of the trees in one strand were uprooted or snapped and fell in nearly every direction.

Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue Department reported significant damage in Harrisville. A barn roof was blown off and a shed was destroyed by a downed tree. Part of a metal roof was also blown off. Numerous trees were downed in the city and one tree fell onto a house. Numerous power and phone lines were also downed.

A trained spotter in Woodstock reported several trees downed, with at least one tree falling into a car. Roof and siding damage was also reported.

An NWS Storm Survey found a path of tree damage along Stony Hill Road and Route 522. Dozens of large trees were snapped and uprooted in the same direction. A utility company transmission tower was knocked down east of Route 522.

Fifty trees were destroyed on Skylars Lane Way.

Several homes lost roofs and numerous trees were downed along Indian Hollow Road.

A local newspaper reported that downed trees destroyed a mobile home . Two minor injuries were also reported.

An automated observation at Sandy Hook Elementary School measured a wind gust of 58 MPH.

A trained spotter reported several trees down in Gore. One tree fell on a historical home.

A local newspaper reported that a downed tree caused significant roof damage to a home on Sterrett Lane.

Several trees were downed along Hunting Ridge Road to St. Clair Road. Damage was reported to a double wide trailer and to a pickup truck.

A local newspaper reported that lightning caused a fire that destroyed a storage shed on Parnassus Road.

A local newspaper reported trees and power lines downed in Linden. Ten to twelve homes were damaged.

An NWS storm survey team concluded a tornado caused a 12 mile-long concentrated path of tree damage. Evidence of initial tornado damage was found in northern Fauquier County about 2 miles northeast of Rectortown along Route 715, Old Carters Mill Road just west of Atoika Road. From this point eastward, a fairly consistent path of damage was found, which included numerous uprooted and snapped off large trees. The tornado narrowly missed the town of Middleburg, passing just south of the town along Sullivans Mill Road. The tornado was at its widest point at Sullivans Mill Road and Route 626, Halfway Road, where numerous trees were damaged. The tornado then crossed into south central Loudoun County. As the tornado approached the town of Aldie, the damage path narrowed and became more scattered in coverage. There was still a good deal of damage along US Route 50 in Aldie. After passing east of Aldie near Tail Race Road, Route 621, near its intersection with US Route 50, the tornado damage path disappeared.

A trained spotter reported several trees down blocking roads in Cross Junction.

An areal survey was conducted in Luray. An intermittent path of damage approximately 3 miles long from the high school to the east was caused by straight line winds from thunderstorm microbursts. Numerous trees were snapped or uprooted. One home had its tin roof and chimney blown off. Numerous barns and outbuildings were either damaged or destroyed. One mobile home was damaged. Eight parked vehicles had their windows blown out by wind blown rocks. Many power lines were also downed. The strongest wind in Luray destroyed a large well constructed 30 foot by 40 foot barn. Total structural damage by local Emergency Management was estimated to be around $237,000.

Penny-sized hail was reported in Luray.

A local newspaper reported several downed trees blocking roads in Boyce.

Fauquier County Emergency Management reported around 10 trees down in Markham, with one tree into a house.

A trained spotter reported part of a roof blown off and wrapped in a fence just east of Green Spring. Another spotter reported trees down off Green Spring Road.

A trained spotter reported that a 40 by 50 foot barn was blown over.

An NWS survey concluded that a severe thunderstorm created an intermittent path of damage from Millwood east northeast to where Route 7 crosses the Blue Ridge near the Shenandoah Retreat area. At least 12 homes in that area were damaged, consisting of trees into houses, siding and roof damage. Winds were estimated near 80 to 90 mph. An areal survey observed that the trees were mainly all laid out parallel to the path of the storm. Local Emergency Management estimated total damages in the eastern portion of the county to be around $44,000.

A local newspaper reported that Route 7 was closed from the Loudoun County line east to Berryville due to downed trees and power lines.

Fauquier County Emergency Management reported a roof blown off a house in Delaplane. Twenty five large trees were downed on Winchester Road along with several power lines.

Local law enforcement reported several trees and wires down in eastern Clarke County, including on Retreat Road, Village Lane, Mountain Ridge Lane, and Ross Lane. A tree fell on a house and a detached garage was damaged.

An NWS storm survey observed extensive tree damage in Lucketts. There were also wires down in front of Lucketts Elementary School on Route 15. Winds were estimated at 75 MPH.

An automated observation at Hutchison Elementary School measured a wind gust of 58 MPH.

Several trees were downed along Knights Bridge Court in Reston, with some trees falling on homes. Trees were downed sporadically from Automnwood Road in Reston through Governor Square and Lake Anna across Baron Cameron Avenue and further nothreast to Route 7. A wind gust of 63 MPH was recorded at the US Geological Survey Building nearby.

An NWS Storm Survey concluded an EF-0 tornado occurred in the Green Spring/Welltown area. About a dozen trees were snapped and uprooted in varied directions near the intersection of Green Spring Drive and Green Spring Court.

Hail was reported by an amateur radio operator, a trained spotter and local newspaper. Hail diameters ranged from nickel to golf ball-sized.

The tornado crossed into Stafford County and lifted near Hartwood. The total path length of the tornado was near 10 miles.

Local newspapers reported dozens of downed trees between Charlottesville and Hollymead. Many were on Proffitt Rd, where one car was damaged.

The tornado crossed into Stafford County and lifted near Hartwood. The total path length of the tornado was near 10 miles.

An NWS storm survey concluded that an EF-1 tornado touched down briefly in southern Stafford County approximately 3 miles south of Ramouth about 400 yards southwest of the intersection of Hulls Chapel Road, Route 653, and Moorewood Lane. Maximum winds were estimated to be 95 mph. The storm impacted the community of Woods of Able Lake located on the south end of Abel Reservoir. Mainly tree damage was observed. The tornado lifted near Mountain View Road and Oakenwald Lane. This tornado path intersected the path of a tornado on May 8, 2008.
