AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
355 PM MDT SUN JUL 15 2007

.SYNOPSIS...HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT OVER UTAH WILL SLOWLY SHIFT EAST
THROUGH THE EARLY PART OF THE WEEK. MOISTURE WILL INCREASE OVER THE
AREA MONDAY AND TUESDAY BEFORE DRIER AIR PUSHES INTO WESTERN UTAH ON
WEDNESDAY.

&&

.DISCUSSION...HIGH PRESSURE REMAINS CENTERED OVER UTAH TODAY WITH
MOISTURE STREAMING INTO WESTERN UTAH FROM THE SOUTH. GOES-DERIVED
PRECIPITABLE WATER ALREADY UP TO AN INCH OR MORE OVER PORTIONS OF
WESTERN UTAH. THIS MOISTURE HAS ALLOWED CONVECTION TO QUICKLY
DEVELOP TODAY. EXPECT ISOLATED TO WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS TO CONTINUE OVER MOST OF THE CWA THROUGH THE EVENING
HOURS. TEMPERATURES REMAINED VERY HOT THROUGHOUT THE AREA TODAY
DESPITE INCREASED CLOUD COVER...AND WILL LIKELY STAY WARM OVERNIGHT
AS COOLING WILL BE LIMITED DUE TO CLOUD COVER.

AS THE RIDGE AXIS SHIFTS EAST TOMORROW...MOISTURE WILL SPREAD INTO
CENTRAL AND EASTERN UTAH...RESULTING IN INCREASED AREAL COVERAGE OF
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. HAVE STAYED WITH THE IDEA OF MAX
TEMPERATURES BEING A COUPLE OF DEGREES COOLER TOMORROW DUE TO CLOUDS
AND SHOWERS. DRIER AIR STARTS WORKING ITS WAY INTO EXTREME WESTERN
UTAH ON TUESDAY WHILE AMPLE MOISTURE REMAINS OVER THE CENTRAL AND
EASTERN PORTIONS OF THE CWA. HOWEVER...A SHORTWAVE DISTURBANCE
MOVING ACROSS NORTHWEST UTAH ON TUESDAY SHOULD PROVIDE ENOUGH LIFT
TO GENERATE CONVECTION THERE DESPITE DECREASING MOISTURE.
THUS...HAVE KEPT MENTION OF POPS THROUGHOUT THE AREA FOR TUESDAY.

DRIER AIR PUSHES FARTHER EAST INTO THE AREA ON WEDNESDAY AND
THURSDAY...ALLOWING WESTERN UTAH TO DRY OUT. HOWEVER...INCREASING
WINDS MIDWEEK AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING TROUGH COULD RESULT IN FIRE
WEATHER CONCERNS FOR THE WESTERN VALLEYS. IN ADDITION...AS SKIES
CLEAR OUT...EXPECT TEMPERATURES TO INCREASE AGAIN TO RECORD OR
NEAR-RECORD VALUES. THE TROUGH WILL SLIDE NORTH OF THE AREA...AND
THE RIDGE IS STILL PROGGED BY THE GFS TO STRENGTHEN OVER COLORADO.
THIS POSITIONING OF THE HIGH COULD BRING A FORMIDABLE SURGE OF
MOISTURE INTO THE AREA FROM THE SOUTHEAST FOR NEXT WEEKEND.

&&

.AVIATION...A DELAYED LAKE BREEZE SUPPORTING NORTHWEST WINDS WILL
MAKE AN APPEARANCE AT THE KSLC TERMINAL LATE THIS AFTERNOON. THE
NORTHWEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN PLACE BETWEEN 2200 UTC AND
0300 UTC AROUND WHICH TIME SOUTHEAST WINDS WILL RETURN TO THE
TERMINAL. THERE IS A 10 PERCENT CHANCE THAT GUSTY ERRATIC WINDS
ASSOCIATED WITH THUNDERSTORM OUTFLOW WILL IMPACT THE TERMINAL LATE
THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...WET THUNDERSTORMS ARE FORMING OVER MUCH OF THE AREA
TODAY. AIRMASS MOISTURE WILL INCREASE MONDAY AND TUESDAY WITH
WIDESPREAD...MOSTLY WET THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRING. THERE WILL STILL BE
LOCAL LIGHTNING STRIKES AWAY FROM AREAS OF RAINFALL IN THE LOWER
ELEVATIONS AND DESERTS. THE AIRMASS THEN DRIES FOR LATER IN THE WEEK
WITH DRY BREEZY CONDITIONS DEVELOPING ESPECIALLY FOR AREAS WEST OF
I-15.

&&

.SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...

WY...NONE.
