Strong northwest flow, a result of an unseasonably deep polar vortex over the northeast U.S. and southeast Canada, combined with several short waves embedded within the northwest flow aloft, to lead to a two-day outbreak of severe thunderstorms. This was the most significant bout of severe weather north and central Georgia had experienced since mid-April with an almost complete lack of severe weather in May, normally a very active month. The activity peaked during the afternoon and evening hours, but lingered well overnight on the 11th into the early morning hours of the 12th. Most of these thunderstorms affected central and east central Georgia. More widespread severe thunderstorms were observed on the 12th, including much of the Atlanta metropolitan area. A number of the storms produced large hail, while a lesser amount produced damaging downburst winds.

The Johnson County Emergency Management Director reported penny to nickel-sized hail northeast of Wrigthsville near the Washington county border. He also reported that two to three trees were down in the area.
The Cherokee County Emergency Management Director reported golf ball-sized hail.
A storm spotter reported golf ball-sized hail in the Rydal area while the public reported nickel-sized hail just southeast of Rydal.
The public reported nickel-sized hail in the Bent Tree community northeast of Jasper near the Gilmer county line.
The Cherokee County Emergency Management Director reported that lightning struck a home and set it on fire.
The public reported that quarter-sized hail fell for up to 15 minutes east of Buchanan.
The Dawson County 911 Center and the Dawson County Emergency Management Director reported penny-sized hail.
The Cherokee County Emergency Management Director reported that two large trees were down on Georgia Highway 108 blocking the highway. Another large tree was down eight miles west of Canton, also on Georgia Highway 108.
The Dawson County 911 Center reported that three trees were blown down along Georgia Highway 136 northwest of Dawsonville.
The public reported half-dollar-sized hail in Temple for up to 10 minutes. The Temple Fire Department observed quarter-sized hail two miles east of Temple.
The public reported that a 14-foot garage door on a shop building was blown in by strong thunderstorm winds. Pea-sized hail was also observed in the area.
The public reported golf ball-sized hail in the southwest part of Taliaferro county near the Hancock county line and southwest of Crawfordville.
WSB Television, Channel 2 of Atlanta, reported that a tree fell on a home on Bouldercrest Road one mile north of Cedar Grove causing minor damage to the structure.
The Warren County Emergency Management Director and the Warren County 911 Center reported that a number of trees were down on Interstate-20 in the northern part of the county. Other trees were down in other areas of the county, including at least two trees down on U.S. Highway 278 north of Warrenton.
The Warren County Emergency Mangement Director reported that 12 cows were killed from a lightning strike.
The public reported nickel to quarter-sized hail across the northern part of the Columbus area.
The public reported that several trees and power lines were down around Midland. Some were down across roads. The Columbus Ledger reported that downed power lines resulted in approximately 14,000 people being left without power for several hours following the storm.
The public reported golf ball-sized hail. The hail broke out windows in homes in Box Springs.
The Talbot county sheriff and the public reported that a number of large 100-year old pecan and several large oak trees from Box Springs to Juniper were either blown down or uprooted. Several of the trees were four to five feet in diameter. One home sustained significant damage when a large oak tree fell on the structure. The path of wind damage covered an area six to seven miles long in the far southwest and south central part of the county.
The Marion County 911 Center reported that many trees were down across the northern portion of the county near the Talbot county line.
The Taylor County Emergency Management Director reported that strong thunderstorm winds caused considerable damage in the Mauk area. The roof was blown off a home. An adjacent beauty shop was also damaged. Another home in the nearby area also sustained damage from the strong winds. A number of trees were down across the county, many in the Mauk area. Several power lines were also blown or knocked down.
WMAZ Television of Macon reported that thunderstorm wind gusts blew down between 75 and 80 trees across southeastern Crawford county near Lee Pope on Greer and House Roads. Minor damage was reported to a home on House Road and a portion of siding was blown off a double-wide mobile home on Greer Road. Some irrigation equipment in the area was also damaged.
The Peach County 911 Center reported that many trees and several power lines were blown down across the county, especially in the Fort Valley area. The Macon Telegraph reported that downed power lines along Georgia Highway 49 resulted in a power loss to 1500 people in the area. One-quarter to one-half inch diameter hail was also observed in the area.
Employees of the U.S. Post Office in Plains Georgia reported that tennis ball-sized hail fell in the area.
The Cobb County 911 Center reported that a few trees were blown down on Murdock Road.
Well over a dozen reports of large hail, ranging in size from nickels to golf balls were received from the public across eastern Cobb county. The largest hail fell in the Marietta area. Golf ball-sized hail was reported on Interstate-75 at exit 263, on Roswell Road, on Clay Drive and at numerous other locations in Marietta. Several other locations in Marietta reported hail the size of half-dollars or ping-pong balls. Quarter-sized hail fell at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta. As the storm moved south, it weakened some. Only penny to nickel-sized hail was reported in the Smyrna area.
The Dawson County 911 Center reported that penny-sized hail was observed on Georgia Highway 400 and Georgia Highway 53 near Dougherty and southward toward the Forsyth county line. Pea-sized hail was observed in the Dawsonville area.
The Forsyth County 911 Center and the public reported mostly penny-sized hail near the Dawson county on Georgia Highway 400 and at other locations in northeast Forsyth county from Silver City to Oscarville. One report of quarter-sized hail was received. One tree was down on Waldruf Road in the northeast part of the county.
An amateur radio operator reported nickel-sized hail on Interstate 20 at mile marker number 39 between Douglasville and Lithia Springs. Penny-sized hail was also reported by the public in eastern Douglas county.
The Banks County Emergency Management Director reported golf ball-sized hail in the east and southeast part of the county.
The Banks County Emergency Management Director reported that up to 15 trees were blown down across the county, mainly the eastern and southern portions. Three trees were down on power lines. A portion of the Old Navy sign at the Banks Crossing Outlet Mall was damaged by the strong winds.
Numerous reports of large hail were received from the public across Jackson county. One piece of baseball-sized hail was observed in Jefferson, but most of the hail was quarter to golf ball-sized. Quarter to golf ball-sized hail was observed north of Commerce in the Banks Crossing area, just north of Commerce, and in Jefferson.
The public reported that a number of trees were blown down throughout the county. One tree fell on and damaged a truck in Commerce.

The public observed nickel-sized hail along Interstate 985 and Georgia Highway 385 in northeast Hall county. Minor street flooding was also observed.
The public observed penny to quarter-sized hail.
The Barrow County 911 Center reported that many trees were blown down across the northern portion of the county. One home in Winder had some siding damage as well.
The public reported penny-sized hail about five miles north of Hog Mountain near Rest Haven.
The Forsyth County Emergency Management Director reported that at least 20 trees were down across the county. Power lines were down on Keith Bridge and Browns Bridge Roads in the northeast part of the county. Georgia Highway 369 at Browns Bridge Road was closed because of downed trees. Power lines were also down on Wallace Tatum Road.
At least a dozen reports of large hail were received from many parts of Gwinnett county. Golf ball-sized hail fell near Lawrenceville and in Snellville. Penny to nickel-sized hail was reported in Duluth and Grayson. Other reports of penny to quarter-sized hail were received from Duluth, to Grayson, to south of Snellville.
The Gwinnett Daily Post reported that lightning struck a home on Beeblossom Trail. The resulting fire caused heavy damage to the attic and significant damage to the second floor of the home.
The public reported penny-sized hail.
The Forsyth County Emergency Management Director reported that two homes were struck by lightning and set on fire in the western part of Cumming, one on Castleberry Road and another on Wenham Court.
Several reports of large hail were received from the public across the central and southern portions of Forsyth county from Cumming southwest to near the Fulton county line, including Brookwood and Big Creek. Golf ball-sized hail was reported in the Brookwood and Big Creek areas, with penny to nickel-sized hail around Cumming.
Numerous reports of large hail, ranging in size from pennies to golf balls, were received from the public across Rockdale county from Conyers to the southern part of the county near the Henry county line. Golf ball-sized hail was reported in the city of Conyers.
The public measured a wind gust of 64 mph on a home weather station. Three trees were blown down in the area.
The Madison County 911 Center reported that at least eight trees were down across the county, approximately five of which were down on roads. One tree was also down in the vicinity of the Providence Baptist Church in Pocataligo.
The public observed half-dollar-sized hail in the southeast corner of Fulton county near the Clayton county line.
The Fulton county Emergency Management Director reported that many trees were down throughout the city of Atlanta and in the Alpharetta and Roswell areas of North Fulton county as well. Power lines and trees were down along Hope, Roswell, and Mansell Roads in North Fulton county. Power outages were also reported in the area. At least one road was blocked because of downed trees and power lines.
The public observed penny-sized hail in the Alpharetta area. Hail fell, ranging in size from peas to pennies for up to 5 minutes.
Several reports of large hail were received from the public across eastern DeKalb county from just south of Stone Mountain to the Rockdale county line south of Lithonia. Quarter-sized hail reports in the Lithonia area were common, with one report of golf ball to tennis ball-sized hail.
The Fulton County 911 Center reported that a couple of homes in North Fulton county, one a multi-family dwelling, had been set on fire by lightning, one on Madison Court and another on Freemonville Road. Damages were minor and mostly cosmetic.
The Gwinnett Daily Post reported that lightning struck a home on Vicksburg Drive. The resulting fire caused considerable damage to the attic.
Nearly two dozen reports of large hail were received from the public across Henry county. Quarter-sized hail reports were common from the McDonough and Stockbridge areas and other areas in the northern part of the county. Quarter to golf ball-sized hail fell in Locust Grove and McDonough. In McDonough, along Georgia Highway 155, hail covered the ground over one inch deep and a chain link fence was said to have been dented and damaged from the large hail.
The Henry County 911 Center reported that numerous trees were down across the county with widespread power outages reported. In Locust Grove, the public reported that two fences were damaged from downed trees and a basketball goal was blown over.
The Fulton County 911 Center reported that a power line was down and a couple of trees on the west side of College Park and near Fairburn.
The public reported penny-sized hail.
The Spalding County 911 Center reported that a number of trees and power lines were down from Sunny Side to the west side of Griffin. Trees were down on Manley Road west of Atlanta Road in the north part of the county, near Sunny Side. The Griffin Daily News reported that the downed trees also caused several power lines to be knocked down. Power lines were down across Manley Road resulting in several vehicle accidents. The public reported minor damage to a home in Griffin. A few shingles, parts of a gutter and siding were damaged. Loose items, such as lawn furniture, were blown from one yard into another.
The Morgan County 911 Center reported quarter-sized hail.
The public observed penny-sized hail.
The Putnam County Emergency Management Director reported that up to a dozen trees were down in the far northeast part of the county, about 10 miles northeast of Eatonton. Several of the trees were down on roads and several others were down on power lines.
Several reports of quarter-sized hail were received from the public across the northern portion of Lamar county, but especially in the Milner area. Hail was reported on U.S. Highway 41 near the Pike county line in the northwest part of the county.
The Upson County Emergency Management Director observed quarter-sized hail in Thomaston. A storm spotter reported nickel-sized hail on the east side of Thomaston. The same spotter also estimated that wind gusts in the area were between 50 and 60 mph.
The Columbus Ledger/Inquirer reported that lightning struck a tree along U.S. Highway 280 in the Old Louvale Road section of town. The lightning strike traveled through the ground and blew up part of an adjacent water main.
