Although some locations did receive beneficial rain in the last half of the month, heavy rainfall which did occur was too isolated to make any significant impact on drought conditions across South Texas. In fact, drought conditions intensified further across South Texas during March 2006. During March, exceptional drought conditions (per the U.S. Drought Monitor) persisted across the Rio Grande Plains, and expanded east into the Western Coastal Bend. Extreme drought conditions continued across the remainder of the area. The Corpus Christi International Airport recorded only 0.33 inches of rainfall, which was only 19% of normal. Victoria received only 0.45 inches of rainfall, which was 20% of normal. From January 2006 through March 2006, Corpus Christi recorded only 0.64 inches of rainfall. That was 4.56 inches below normal and only 12% of normal rainfall for the first three months of the year. Since December 2005 only 1 inch of rain was recorded at the Corpus Christi International Airport, which was 14% of the average rainfall during this period.Reservoir levels at Choke Canyon and lake Corpus Christi continued to slowly fall through the month, and the wildfire danger remained high across South Texas.
