AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV
138 PM PDT SAT APR 30 2005

.SYNOPSIS...ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE THROUGH NORTHERN NEVADA
TODAY AND SUNDAY FOR MORE WET WEATHER AND AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS.
UNSETTLED WEATHER WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEK WITH INTERMITTENT
PERIODS OF SHOWERS AND AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS.

&&

.SHORT TERM...SHORT TERM MODELS AGREE FAIRLY WELL ON SHORT WAVE
APPROACHING FROM THE WEST TONIGHT AND MOVING ACROSS THE FORECAST
AREA SUNDAY INTO SUNDAY EVENING...WITH A SERIES OF VORT MAXES...
MAINLY SOUTH. CONVECTION SHOULD BE FOCUSED ACROSS OUR CENTRAL ZONES
SUNDAY AS GFS SHOWING NEG LIS ON A NW TO SE AXIS FROM HUMBOLDT COUNTY
THROUGH WHITE PINE COUNTY TOMORROW. BUMPED UP POPS TO LIKELY ACROSS
CENTRAL ZONES AS CONVECTION SHOULD GET GOING PRETTY GOOD THROUGH
THERE TOMORROW AFTERNOON. AFTERNOON CONVECTION CONTINUES THROUGH THE
SHORT TERM AS MID LEVEL CONVERGENCE COMBINES WITH EVAPORATING SURFACE
MOISTURE AS THESE VORTS MOVE THROUGH. BUMPED UP POPS IN NE ELKO
COUNTY TUESDAY AFTERNOON AS A 60+KT JET DIVES IN FROM THE NORTH AND
PROVIDES GOOD COUPLETING OVER THAT AREA. GFS SHOWING NEG 2 TO 3 LIS
OVER THE JARBIDGE AREA TUESDAY AFTERNOON...SO WENT HIGH END CHANCE
WITH AFTERNOON THUNDER. THE RIVER GAGE FOR THE HUMBOLDT RIVER AT
BATTLE MOUNTAIN STILL INDICATING RIVER ABOVE FLOOD STAGE...SO WILL
CONTINUE FLOOD WARNING FOR THIS AREA AND FLOOD WATCH FOR AREA
SURROUNDING THIS WARNING AREA. CANT RULE OUT POSSIBILITY OF LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINSHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON AND SUNDAY CONTRIBUTING TO FURTHER
RISE IN THE RIVER TODAY AND SUNDAY.

.LONG TERM...ACTIVE WEEK IN STORE FOR NORTHERN AND CENTRAL NV. MODELS
SHOWING NEXT UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM OFF OF THE PAC NW COAST MID-WEEK
MOVING ONSHORE BY THE END OF THE WEEK. SOME DIFFERENCES IN MODEL
TIMING WITH MOST NOTABLE BEING CHANGE IN THE GFS BETWEEN 00Z AND 12Z.
LATEST GFS RUN MUCH SLOWER THAN 00Z AS LATEST RUN AS CUT-OFF LOW
BARELY REACHING THE COAST BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON WHILE 00Z RUN HAS A
UPPER TROUGH ALREADY PUSHING INTO WRN UT. WITH OTHER MODELS SOMEWHERE
IN-BETWEEN THESE TWO SOLUTIONS WILL KEEP FORECAST RELATIVELY SIMPLE
FOR NOW. WILL GO WITH CHC POPS FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK ON WITH
AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS GIVEN INSTABILITY AND POTENTIAL FOR LLVL
BAROCLINIC ZONE OVER THE REGION. BEST BET WILL HAVE MAJORITY OF THE
ACTIVITY ALONG HIGHWAY 50 AND THE JARBIDGE MTNS AND HAVE SHOWN A
SLIGHT EMPHASIS FOR THESE AREAS.

CONSIDERING RECENT PATTERN...EXPECT TREND OF INCREASED POPS AND
LOWERING DAYTIME TEMPS TO CONTINUE WITH DAYTIME TEMPS FALLING TO
SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL VALUES. THOUGH WILL SEE HOW THINGS EVOLVE OVER
NEXT FEW DAYS AS MODELS HAVE SHOWN RECENTLY THAT THEY CAN...AND
DO...STRUGGLE WITH SOME OF THESE SYSTEMS. WITH VALLEY RAIN AND MTN
SNOW CONTINUING INTO THE WEEKEND WILL NEED TO KEEP VIGILANT WATCH ON
RIVERS AND STREAMS AS THEY WILL CONTINUE TO FLOW FULL AND FAST WITH
ADDITIONAL PRECIP COMBINING WITH RUNOFF. WITH THIS PATTERN APPEARING
TO BE IN PLACE HEADING INTO THE FOLLOWING WEEK IT WILL BE A LITTLE
WHILE BEFORE WE CAN TRULY START DRYING OUT. FEHRN
