ANALYSIS - A WEAK UPPER LOW IS OVER THE CENTRAL GULF THIS MORNING OVER A 1003 MB SURFACE LOW BOTH OF WHICH ARE FILLING. AN UPPER TROUGH EXTENDS SOUTHWEST TO ANOTHER LOW AROUND 45N 170W WITH A SURFACE LOW COMPLEX THERE AROUND 1008 MB. A STRONG UPPER RIDGE IS ALONG 180 AND IS DEFINITELY PROGRESSIVE. A WEAK WARMFRONT IS MOVING ACROSS THE CENTRAL BERING SEA THIS MORNING WITH A HIGH CENTER OF 1018 MB OVER THE CENTRAL ALEUTIANS. THERE IS NOT MUCH OF A JET THIS MORNING WITH ONLY AROUND 95 KT ALONG 50N SOUTH OF THE AKPENN. RADAR AND SATELLITE PIX SHOWS LOTS OF MOISTURE OVER THE NORTH GULF ASSOCIATED WITH THE LOW. THE 12Z KING SALMON RAOB IS UNSTABLE AND SOUTHWEST AK IS THE TARGET FOR CONVECTION THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. AER FORECASTS - BIG PATTERN CHANGE TAKING PLACE. DUE TO PROGRESSION THE UPPER RIDGE WILL BUILD EASTWARD WITH THE AXIS AROUND 165W BY 18Z FRI AS PER ALL THE MODELS. THIS KICKS OUT THE UPPER LOW CENTER TO THE EASTERN GULF FOR DOWNWARD VERTICAL MOTION. THE RIDGE WILL END UP OVER SOUTHCENTRAL BY 12Z SAT WITH VERY HIGH HEIGHTS OVER THE REGION BY SUN EVENING. LOOK FOR DRYING...MUCH WARMER TEMPS...AND PEOPLE IN ANCHORAGE WILL FINALLY GET TO CUT THEIR LAWNS. A funnel cloud was observed by Matt Taylor as he was driving along the Parks Highway near Chulitna. the time and position of the funnel cloud are estimated based upon conversations with Matt about the event. Matt took digital pictures of this. The Funnel cloud is photographed extending as a thin rope from the cumulonimbus cloud.
