AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO TX
935 PM CDT WED JUN 30 2004

.DISCUSSION...
EARLIER WIDESPREAD RAINS HAVE ENDED ACROSS THE FLOOD WATCH AREA AND
ARE NO LONGER EXPECTED. AS A RESULT, THE FLOOD WATCH FOR FLASH
FLOODING IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT. THESE RAINS PRODUCED A WESTWARD
MOVING OUTFLOW THAT GENERATED SOME CONVECTION WHICH HAD VERY
LOCALIZED INTENSE RAINFALL. THIS SECONDARY CONVECTION HAD ALSO ENDED.
HOWEVER, HAVE KEPT 20 POPS ACROSS THE CWA, DUE TO AN UPPER LEVEL
SHORT-WAVE APPROACHING FROM THE TRANS-PECOS AND FAR NORTHERN MEXICO
AND PROXIMITY TO A MESOSCALE COMPLEX CENTERED EAST OF LAREDO.

REMAINDER OF FORECAST GENERALLY ON TRACK AS SUBTROPICAL RIDGE
ATTEMPTS TO REGAIN ITS USUAL EARLY JULY STRENGTH. PWS WILL DROP OFF
FAIRLY RAPIDLY AND DYNAMICS WILL MOVE EAST OF CWA BY LATE THURSDAY
INTO EARLY FRIDAY. DUE TO EVAPOTRANSPIRATION, SIGNIFICANT LOWER LEVEL
MOISTURE WILL REMAIN IN THE SHORT-TERM, AND DAYTIME HEATING MAY
GENERATE SOME SHOWERS. ALSO, POSSIBILITY EXISTS FOR NORTHWESTERLY
FLOW AROUND RIDGE CENTERED OVER NORTHERN MEXICO COULD ALLOW MESOSCALE
COMPLEXES INTO NORTHEASTERN PARTS OF THE CWA. POPS COVERED WELL IN
THE SHORT-TERM, ALTHOUGH DID SOME MINOR ADJUSTMENTS.

LATER IN THE FORECAST CYCLE, RIDGE WILL FLATTEN MAKING FOR A MORE
ZONAL FLOW. THIS COULD ALLOW SOME CONVECTION TO DRIFT OFF THE MEXICAN
MOUNTAINS INTO THE RIO GRANDE COUNTIES. ALSO, SOME CONVECTION COULD
MOVE INTO THE SOUTHEASTERN COUNTIES NEAR THE CROSSROADS DUE TO THE
SEABREEZE AND WEAKNESS IN THE RIDGE. HOWEVER, HAVE NOT INTRODUCED
POPS TO AWAIT LATER MODEL RUNS FOR CONSISTENCY.
