NORTHEAST OREGON/SOUTHEAST WASHINGTON FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PENDLETON OR
235 PM PST SAT FEB 1 2003
LOWER SNOW LEVELS AND AN END TO PERSISTENT MODERATE RAIN HAS ALLOWED
MOST OF THE AREA/S RIVERS TO START TO RECEDE. THE WALLA WALLA RIVER
IS STILL SHOWING RISES AND THE FLOOD WARNING THERE CONTINUES. THE
CREST CONTINUES TO FLOW DOWN THE YAKIMA...AND IS EXPECTED TO REACH
THE CONFLUENCE WITH THE COLUMBIA SUNDAY. EXPECT THE SMALLER STREAMS
TO BE PRETTY MUCH DONE BY THIS EVENING.
AN UPPER TROUGH CONTINUES TO PUSH ACROSS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. THE
MAIN FRONTAL PRECIP BAND HAS MOVED OUT OF OUR AREA...AND ONLY
SCATTERED RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS LINGER OVER PORTIONS OF EASTERN
OREGON. A WEAK UPPER RIDGE WILL MOVE OVER THE AREA TONIGHT.
SUBSIDENCE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS RIDGE...COMBINED WITH THE LOSS OF
DAYTIME HEATING...SHOULD LIMIT SHOWER ACTIVITY TO UP SLOPE PRODUCED
SHOWERS OVER THE EAST OREGON MOUNTAINS. ALSO A FEW SHOWERS WILL
CONTINUE NEAR THE CREST OF THE CASCADES. A WEAK WAVE MOVING THROUGH
WESTERN OREGON MAY CAUSE SHOWERS TO EXTEND EAST ACROSS DESCHUTES
COUNTY TONIGHT AS WELL. THE UPPER FLOW WILL BECOME INCREASINGLY
NORTH-NORTHWEST AS AN UPPER RIDGE BUILDS OFFSHORE SUNDAY AND MONDAY.
AN UPPER WAVE IMBEDDED WITHIN THIS FLOW IS EXPECTED TO MOVE OVER THE
NORTHERN ROCKIES SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY. THERE MAY BE ENOUGH
MOISTURE FOR SOME LIGHT PRECIP TO DEVELOP ALONG THE WASHINGTON
CASCADE CREST AND ALONG UP SLOPE PRONE AREAS OF THE BLUE...
WALLOWA...STRAWBERRY AND OCHOCO MOUNTAINS. GKH
EXTENDED...AS RIDGE CONTINUES TO BUILD JUST OFF THE COAST...
NORTHERLY FLOW OVER THE REGION WILL KEEP TEMPERATURES COOL WITH SNOW
LEVELS RELATIVELY LOW. EXTENDED MODELS ARE DIFFERING IN THE IDEA OF
WAVES MOVING SOUTHWARD WITHIN THE NORTHERLY FLOW. EVEN IF THEY DO
MOVE OVER THE EASTERN OREGON MOUNTAINS...MOISTURE WILL BE THE
LIMITING FACTOR. JR
