Hail and Damaging Winds in Georgia, May 2, 2003

The public reported that a large tree fell on their vehicle, injuring the five passengers inside. All injuries were minor. Some power lines were also blown down in the area.

The La Fayette Post Office reported golf ball-sized hail, which caused damage to a number of cars in the parking lot and in the area.

The public reported hail, ranging in size from dimes to golf balls, which lasted for several minutes. In one case just east of Bremen, the hail was said to have covered the ground. It looked as if it had snowed. Slight hail damage was reported to cars.

An off duty National Weather Service employee observed half-dollar-sized hail at his home 3 miles north-northeast of Starrs Mill. Hail,ranging in size from pennies to half-dollars fell for several minutes, with a good covering on the ground following the event. Numerous reports of hail, ranging in size from quarters to golf balls, were received from the public in Fayetteville, the eastern side of Peachtree City, Woolsey, and Brooks. The hail covered the ground in several instances.

The Haralson county 911 center reported that several trees were blown down throughout the county.

Numerous reports of downed trees were received from the public in the Douglasville area, especially between downtown and the Chapel Hill area southwest of Douglasville. Several trees fell on homes south and west of Douglasville along Central Church Road, Daniel Mill Road, Post Road, as well as in the Mirror Lake Country Club just east of Villa Rica. A number of power lines were also blown down or knocked down by fallen trees during this event and a large hotel sign was blown down in Douglasville. An off duty National Weather Service employee estimated that over 100 trees were blown down in just the Chapel Hill area alone. One person reported that his 1996 Toyota Camry was blown off the road, near Thorton Road and Interstate-20, with winds estimated in excess of 60 mph.

The Carroll county Emergency Management Director reported that numerous trees and some power lines were blown down all around the county. A wind gust of 60 mph was measured by an amateur radio operator four miles north of Villa Rica.

The Carroll county 911 center and Emergency Management Director reported that numerous trees and power lines were blown down throughout the county. Two homes sustained minor to moderate damage as a result of the downed trees and roof damage caused by wind.

The Wilkes county newspaper reported that a number of trees were toppled during a severe thunderstorm. Damage was minimal as the trees missed homes and other structures. A large and very old oak tree fell at the Hopkins Funeral Home, but no damage to the structure was noted.

The Carroll county Emergency Management Director reported that lightning struck two homes in the county causing minor to moderate structural damage.

The Union City police department reported that numerous large trees and a number of power lines were blown down in the city. In three instances, the trees fell on homes causing significant damage to the structures. One person was injured in one of the homes as the tree fell on the house. Three other structures sustained roof damage from wind alone. In addition, two billboards near Interstate-85 were damaged by the wind.

The public, as well as amateur radio operators and the Fayette county 911 center reported nickel to quarter-sized hail in Fayetteville and nickel-sized hail in Woolsey.

The Gwinnett-Daily Post and the public reported that lightning strikes caused a number of problems around the county. In Lawrenceville, a 24-year-old female was struck and injured by lightning. In Loganville, a home was struck by lightning. The attic and the garage were set on fire causing the house to suffer significant damage. In Norcross, the Ashley Run apartment complex suffered moderate damage when they were set on fire by lightning. Finally, the public reported in Grayson that a tree was struck by lightning, causing the tree to fall.

The public reported that penny-sized hail fell for up to 10 minutes at some locations.

The West Georgia Beacon of Hogansville reported that a tree fell on a mobile home on Joe Cook Road causing damage to the structure.

The Jasper county 911 center reported that a number of trees were down throughout the county.

The Warren county 911 center reported that a number of trees were blown down across the county.

The Carroll county 911 center reported golf ball-sized hail.

The West Georgia Beacon of Hogansville reported that hail the size of half-dollars dented vechiles in Franklin. The public reported quarter-sized hail in Glenn.

The Fayette county Emergency Management Director reported that a number of trees, and at least four power lines were blown down in the Fayetteville and Peachtree City area. One very large oak tree fell on a home in Fayetteville causing major damage to the structure. At least a dozen roads were blocked by fallen trees and the power was out for several hours in the Peachtree City area. A public works employee was injured later when a tree limb fell out of a tree while he was clearing a roadway.

The public reported penny-sized hail in Stockbridge and quarter-sized hail in Locust Grove. The hail lasted up to 10 minutes at one location in Locust Grove.

An amateur radio operator reported that very heavy rain had resulted in some minor street flooding on Ronald Reagan Parkway.

The Newnan Times-Herald reported that several homes in the county suffered minor to moderate damage as the result of downed trees from thunderstorm winds. A large, old oak tree crashed through the roof of a home on Corinth road in the southwest part of the county. The 100-year old farmhouse shifted, trapping the residents inside as none of the doors would open. The home was declared a total loss. Another house in Newnan on Turkey Creek Road sustained damage from a downed tree. Substantial wind damage was also reported in Grantville. On Griffin Street, winds estimated at 80 mph tore off the roof of a service station and at least three homes suffered significant damage as a result of fallen trees on the structures. A number of vehicles were severely damaged as the result of fallen trees. In Senoia, the public reported that several trees and power lines were down.

The Gwinnett county Skywarn coordinator reported that three large trees were down in Lilburn, and countless number of limbs in the same area. The public also reported that one tree was blown down in Grayson.

The Walton county 911 center reported that several trees were down in the county. Some of the trees landed on homes causing minor structural damage.

The Butts county 911 center reported that lightning struck a home. The home was set on fire and completely destroyed.

The Carroll county Emergency Management Director reported that a home sustained minor damage because of high water caused by excessive rainfall of 1 to 2 inches in less than one hour and poor drainage conditions.

The Baldwin county 911 center reported that a number of trees were blown down in the downtown area.

The Lithonia police department reported that some power lines were blown down.

The public reported quarter-sized hail in East Griffin and an amateur radio operator reported penny-sized hail west of Griffin, while the public reported nickel-sized hail in Sunny Side.

The Meriwether county Fire Department reported that a number of trees were blown down throughout the county. As noted by amateur radio operators, however, the majority of the trees, and even some power lines, were down in Gay and Greenville. One person was injured by a fallen tree in Gay.

The Troup county 911and the La Grange newspaper reported that a number of trees were blown down around the county, especially on the west side of La Grange. At least five homes and one vehicle were damaged when large trees fell on them. A brick fence and an iron and brick fence at another location were also damaged. One man received injuries as ceiling tiles fell on him when the ceiling in his living room collapsed during the strong thunderstorm winds. Another family of five was trapped inside of their home when a large tree fell on the house. However, no injuries were reported. The Troup county 911 center received reports of fallen trees at 40 different locations and at least six roads in the county were blocked by downed trees. County workers spent most of the night removing debris from blocked roadways.

The Harris county 911 center reported that a number of trees had been blown down in the county. One person measured a wind gusts of 71 mph on their home weather station in Waverly Hall at 920 pm EDT.

The Newnan Times-Herald reported that lightning struck a home on Vineyard Drive setting the attic on fire. The resulting fire was confined to the attic and adjacent garage. However, the living room and the kitchen suffered water damage. Two vehicles parked in the garage also suffered significant damage, including a classic 1975 Ford Mustang.

The Upson county 911 center, and the Thomaston newspaper reported that numerous trees were blown down causing major damage in the city. Several of the trees landed on homes and even some vehicles causing minor to moderate structural damage. Others brought down power lines, telephone lines, and cable TV lines.

The Crawford county Sheriff's office reported that some trees were down on Georgia Highway 42, five miles southeast of Roberta. The Georgia Post of Roberta reported that a number of trees were blown down throughout the county.

The Macon county Sheriff's Office reported that a number of trees were blown down across the county.

A off-duty Robins Air Force Base meteorologist measured wind gusts of 74 kts at his residence in Jeffersonville. The Twiggs county 911 center reported that a number of trees were blown down through the county.

The public reported that some trees were blown down as well as some highway signs that were blown onto the highway.

The Wilkinson county 911 center reported that a number of trees were blown down around the county.

The Chattahoochee county 911 center reported that a number of trees were down on the base and some power lines as well. Power was out on the base as a result.

The public reported that a number of trees and power lines were blown down across the county. The old water tower on Dublin Highway in Cochran was blown down and another residence on Duskin Drive in Cochran suffered damage when a tree fell on the house.

The Dodge county 911 center reported that a number of trees had been blown down around the county. Several of these fell on homes, causing minor to moderate structural damage, both in the county and in the city of Eastman. Several stores in Eastman were damaged by high winds and some county residents lost out buildings or storage shelters during the high winds. In addition, two vehicles were damaged when trees fell on them while others ran into the downed trees during the poor visibility and inclement weather conditions.

Several reports of thunderstorm wind damage were received from the public. Some signs were blown onto Interstate-75 at mile marker 134 west of Warner Robins. Trees were blown down in the city, at one residence falling on a home causing damage to the structure and at another residence causing damage to a fence. An amateur radio operator reported that some power lines were down in the city as well.

The Schley county newspaper reported that a number of trees were split off or broken off. Some of these trees landed on and caused damage to the Supervised Probation Inc. office. Sixty-percent of the roof caved in. Consequently, the building also suffered some water damage.

The Dooly county Sheriff's Office and the Dooly county 911 center reported that a number of trees were down in the county.

The Pulaski county 911 center reported that 30 to 40 trees were blown down, some falling on and causing minor structural damage to homes. One home suffered significant damage when a large oak tree fell on the structure, as well as the two nearby vehicles in the driveway. Five barns at the end of the Harness Track Arena suffered substantial damage as the wind tore off the tin roofs.

The Laurens county 911 center reported that some trees were blown down in Montrose and Rentz.

The Pulaski county 911 center reported that a number of trees and several power lines were blown down around the county. In Hawkinsville, some road signs were blown over.

The public, as well as the Abbeville cooperative observer for the National Weather Service, reported that a number of trees and several power lines were blown down around the county, including two large pine trees south of Abbeville.
