UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT 230 PM MDT TUE AUG 20 2002 .SYNOPSIS...A SOUTHWEST FLOW ALOFT WILL BE OVER UTAH THIS WEEK. MOISTURE OVER THE AREA WILL GRADUALLY DECREASE FROM THE WEST TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. .DISCUSSION...SURFACE BOUNDARY OVER NORTHWEST UT PROVIDING A NICE FOCUS FOR CONVECTION. PLENTY OF SHEAR OVER THE AREA ALSO AND A LEAST ONE REPORT OF DIME SIZE HAIL FROM A CELL A COUPLE OF HOURS AGO. MOST OF THE CELLS ARENT THAT STRONG BUT A COUPLE HAVE BEEN CLOSE AND WE WILL NEED TO WATCH THEM. EVEN WITH THE FOCUS EXPECT THAT ACTIVITY WILL FOLLOW A FAIRLY NORMAL DIURNAL DECLINE AROUND SUNSET. ELSEWHERE MOST OF THE ACTIVITY IS TERRAIN TRIGGERED ALONG THE MOUNTAINS WITH MOST WEAKENING AS THEY MOVE ACROSS THE VALLEYS. EXPECT TO FOLLOW THE EARLIER PACKAGE FOR THE MOST PART FOR TONIGHT BUT WILL PROBABLY BUMP PROBABILITIES UP A LITTLE OVER THE SLC AND OGD ZONES AND PROBABLY DROP OUT THE SOUTHWEST VALLEYS WHERE DRYING HAS ALREADY PUSHED IN. MODELS STILL SCREAMING THAT STRONG DRYING WILL TAKE PLACE TONIGHT/WEDNESDAY AND THE AIRMASS WILL BECOME MORE STABLE TOMORROW. WILL LIMIT THREAT TO JUST THE MOUNTAINS BETWEEN THE UINTAS AND BCE AND ONLY GO SLIGHT CHANCE EVEN THERE. THEN AS THE TROF BEGINS EJECTING SHORTWAVES ACROSS THE NORTHERN PORTION OF THE AREA ENOUGH MOISTURE DEVELOPS FOR A SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE RAFT RIVER MOUNTAINS IN EXTREME NORTHWEST UT FOR THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. OTHERWISE THE MAIN CHANGE WILL BE A BIT OF COOLING OVER THE AREA AS THE THERMAL RIDGE IS PUSHED FARTHER EAST BY THE APPROACHING TROF. WE DONT EVER REALLY GET MUCH OF A DIRECT HIT FROM THIS TROF AS IT BEGINS TO SHEAR DURING THE LATTER HALF OF THE WEEK. BUT THE EJECTING SHORTWAVES WILL KEEP TEMPERATURES FROM CLIMBING MUCH OVER THE NORTH CLEAR THROUGH THE EXTENDED PERIOD. THE SOUTH WILL WARM A LITTLE OVER THE WEEKEND THEN NOT CHANGE MUCH DURING THE EARLY PART OF THE WEEK. THERE IS A HINT THAT WE MAY SEE SOME MOISTURE WORK INTO THE NORTH ABOUT TUESDAY BUT NOT ENOUGH CONFIDENCE THAT WILL HAPPEN TO PUT ANYTHING INTO THE FORECAST NOW. SLC 3-00 CDC 320 SANDERS .SLC...NONE.
