SOUTH PLAINS AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX
307 PM CDT WED AUG 21 2002

PERSISTENT MID LEVEL CLOUD COVER CONTINUES A SLOW EASTWARD DRIFT
ACROSS THE CWA TODAY. A FEW SPRINKLES ARE ALL THAT HAVE OCCURRED
WITH THIS MID LEVEL MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY THUS FAR. AREAS TO THE
EAST ARE UNSTABLE WITH THE CONVECTIVE TEMPERATURE JUST BEING
REACHED. AT LAST LOOK A FEW CU WERE BEGINNING TO DEVELOP FROM GAIL
NORTHWARD TO CHILDRESS. OTHER AREA OF POTENTIAL RAIN IS LOCATED NEAR
WEAK SURFACE CONVERGENCE GENERATED FROM SLIGHTLY COOLER AIR PUSHING
EASTWARD AND BACKING WINDS ACROSS THE SOUTHEASTERN SOUTH PLAINS/BIG
COUNTRY. IF THIS AREA OF CONVERGENCE CAN PERSIST WE MAY SEE
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOP FROM TAHOKA TO SILVERTON. ONE LAST
AREA WHERE THUNDERSTORMS MAY DEVELOP WILL BE ON THE HIGHER TERRAIN
OF NEW MEXICO AND SURFACE TROUGH THAT IS LOCATED NEAR THE TX/NM
BORDER. WITH ALL THIS SAID IT LEADS TO THE POTENTIAL FOR SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS FOR THE ENTIRE CWA. SURFACE TROUGH SHOULD PERSIST INTO
THURSDAY WITH ONLY ISOLATED CHANCES ALONG IT. UPPER LEVEL HIGH
PRESSURE WILL SLIDE BACK TO THE SOUTHWEST AND STRENGTHEN THROUGH THE
WEEKEND. THIS SHOULD KEEP RAIN CHANCES TO THE TOO LOW TO MENTION
CATEGORY. WEAK SURFACE FRONTS WILL MOVE TOWARDS THE AREA AS
DISTURBANCES MOVE NORTH AND EAST OF WEST TEXAS IN THE EXTENDED BUT
BELIEVE HIGH PRESSURE WILL KEEP ANY CONVECTION TO A MINIMUM AND WILL
NOT MENTION ANY CHANCES AT THIS TIME.
