NORTHERN GREAT BASIN FORECAST DISCUSSION...CORRECTED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV
252 PM PDT FRI SEP 6 2002

.SYNOPSIS...LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TO
THE EAST OF NORTHERN NEVADA BY SUNDAY....BRINGING CHANCES OF SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS TO THE AREA THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING. A DRIER
WEATHER PATTERN WILL FOLLOW THIS SYSTEM SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY...
BEFORE ANOTHER AREA OF LOW PRESSURE GIVES A SLIGHT CHANCE OF
PRECIPITATION FRIDAY.

.DISCUSSION...FAIRLY STRONG VORTMAX MOVING ACROSS EASTERN NV THIS
AFTERNOON..AS RIGHT ENTRANCE REGION OF A 100+ KNOT 3H JET CORE
MOVES EASTWARD ACROSS NORTHWESTERN NV. PLENTY OF MID AND LOW-LEVEL
MOISTURE PRESENT ACROSS THE CWFA THIS AFTERNOON...AS GOES PW
IMAGERY INDICATES PWS RANGING FROM 0.50 OF AN INCH...MAINLY WEST...
TO NEAR OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE 1.00 IN THE EAST AND SOUTHEAST.
HIGHEST STORM CELL CORE REFLECTIVITIES HAVE RANGED FROM 55 TO 62
DBZ THIS AFTERNOON WITH REPORTS OF SMALL...PEA-SIZED...HAIL AND
BRIEFLY HEAVY RAINFALL. EXPECT SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO
DIMINISH THIS EVENING IN THE NORTHWEST...AS VORTMAX MOVES INTO
SOUTHERN ID. HOWEVER 3H RIGHT ENTRANCE JET DYNAMICS WILL KEEP
CONVECTION GOING OVERNIGHT IN THE REMAINDER OF THE CWFA. DEEPEST
MOISTURE IN WHITE PINE COUNTY...SO HAVE GONE NUMEROUS POPS THERE
WITH SCATTERED ELSEWHERE.

DRY SLOT BEGINS TO OVERSPREAD THE REGION SATURDAY...BUT IT WILL BE
TOUGH TO SCOUR MOISTURE OUT OF THE EAST ON SATURDAY. HAVE KEPT
SLIGHT CHANCES IN THE NORTHWEST...AS WEAK VORTMAX CROSSES JUST TO
THE NORTH ALONG THE OR BORDER DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EARLY
EVENING. HAVE INCLUDED CHANCE POPS IN THE AFTERNOON IN EAST
CENTRAL...WHERE MOISTURE WILL DEPART LATEST...AND SLIGHT CHANCES
ACROSS THE REST OF THE CWFA SATURDAY AFTERNOON. TROUGH MOVES NORTH
OF NV SUNDAY...AS IT SPLITS FROM SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE TROUGH
WHICH SAGS SOUTHWESTWARD TOWARD THE SOUTHERN CA COAST. LOOKS LIKE
AIR WILL BE TOO STABLE TO PRODUCE CONVECTION SUNDAY.

FLOW AROUND UPPER LOW CLOSING OFF THE SOUTHERN CA COAST MONDAY AND
AND UPPER HIGH OVER NORTHERN NM MAY DRAW SUBTROPICAL MOISTURE
NORTHWARD ACROSS SOUTHERN NV MONDAY. TROPICAL DEPRESSION 11 IS
PROGGED BY NHC TO MOVE NORTHWARD ALONG THE WESTERN COAST OF THE BAJA
PENINSULA TONIGHT THROUGH EARLY MONDAY...PROVIDING ADDITIONAL
SUBTROPICAL MOISTURE FOR THE SOUTHERLY FLOW WHICH MAY DEVELOP. FOR
NOW THERE IS SOME DISAGREEMENT IN THE MEDIUM-RANGE MODELS ON THIS
FLOW PATTERN. HAVE INTRODUCED SLIGHT CHANCES OF AFTERNOON
THUNDERSTORMS FOR SOUTHERN ZONES FOR TUESDAY AFTERNOON. MRF AND MRF
ENSEMBLES...AS WELL AS 00Z UKMET...SHOW NEXT TROUGH MOVING INTO THE
WEST FROM THE EASTERN PAC THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. FOR NOW HAVE
INCLUDED SLIGHT CHANCES FOR THUNDERSTORMS FRIDAY...BUT WILL HAVE TO
WATCH FOR MODEL CONTINUITY.

.EKO...FLASH FLOOD WATCH TONIGHT FOR ZONES 31...32 AND 34.
