NORTHERN GREAT BASIN FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV
230 PM PDT WED JUL 24 2002
.SYNOPSIS...AN APPROACHING LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL BRING A THREAT
OF THUNDERSTORMS TO EASTERN NEVADA THROUGH FRIDAY. THE PASSAGE OF
THIS SYSTEM WILL RESULT IN SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND
CLEAR SKIES LATE THIS WEEKEND AND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK.
.SHORT TERM...MAIN FORECAST PROBLEM IN THE SHORT TERM WILL BE POPS
AND TEMPERATURES IN RESPONSE TO APPROACHING 5H TROUGH CURRENTLY OFF
THE CA COAST. FOUR CORNERS HIGH WILL DRAW UP SOME MID-LEVEL
MOISTURE WHICH LOOKS TO STAY MAINLY IN EASTERN NV FOR ISOLD
THUNDERSTORMS. FOR TONIGHT...MOST ACTION WILL BE FOUND IN WHITE
PINE/SOUTHERN LANDER/SOUTHERN EUREKA COUNTIES WHERE THETA-E RIDGE AND
NEGATIVE LIS ARE PRESENT. WILL GO WITH SCT POPS. MODELS INDICATE
INSTABILITY FOR ELKO COUNTY AND WILL USE ISOLD POPS THERE. NE
CORNER HAS HAS RRJ SUPPORT THIS EVENING. WITHOUT ANY STRONG DYNAMICS
TO KEEP CONVECTION GOING...SHOULD BE DIURNAL IN NATURE AND DIE OFF
AFTER SUNSET. FOR THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT...SHEARED-OUT TROUGH
SITS ACROSS N CA AND NW NV. 60KT JET MAX NOSES INTO CA AND CENTRAL
NV. AVN DRIES OUT ATMOS QUICKLY...BUT BELIEVE RESIDUAL MOISTURE WILL
STILL ALLOW CONVECTION TO FIRE WITH JET SUPPORT...MAINLY IN THE
SOUTH. WITHOUT ANY FAVORED REGION OF JET IN PLACE...AGAIN EXPECT ANY
CONVECTION TO BE DIURNAL IN NATURE AND END AFTER SUNSET. FOR
FRIDAY...SHEARED-OUT TROUGH SLOW TO MOVE OUT...BUT VERY DRY AIR
BEHIND IT. WILL LEAVE IN ISOLD POPS IN THE FAR EAST AS TROUGH HASNT
FULLY MOVED OUT. PLEASANTLY COOLER AIR ASSOCIATED WITH TROUGH WILL
BRING TEMPERATURES SLOWLY DOWN TO SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL VALUES...IN
THE 80S.
.LONG TERM...AVN STILL HOLDS TROUGH BACK ACROSS EXTREME EASTERN
PART OF CWA. LIS ALSO AT OR BELOW ZERO...SO WILL ADD IN A SLIGHT
CHANCE TO CONTINUE IN THE EAST. FOR SUNDAY...MEDIUM RANGE MODELS
BEGIN TO DIVERGE ON SOLUTIONS. EXTENDED AVN AND ECMWF SHOW MORE
ZONAL FLOW WITH 5H TROUGH DROPPING DOWN FROM CANADA. HOWEVER...UKMET
AND CANADIAN SHOW A MORE AMPLIFIED RIDGE OVER WEST WITH 5H LOW
DROPPING DOWN BEHIND IT. IF THIS SCENARIO OCCURS...TROUGH WILL NOT
HAVE MUCH INFLUENCE AND WILL ONLY BREAK DOWN AMPLIFIED RIDGE IN
PACIFIC. OTHER FACTOR WHICH BOTH MODELS ARE PICKING UP ON IS
REMNANTS OF HURRICANE. MODELS WANT TO MOVE THIS FEATURE UP BETWEEN
HIGH IN CENTRAL US AND HIGH IN PACIFIC. WILL CONTINUE WITH DRY
FORECAST DUE TO LOW CONFIDENCE IN SOLUTIONS AND BRIEF NEXT SHIFT
THAT CHANGE MAY NEED TO BE MADE. STROOZAS
.EKO...NONE.
