SOUTHWEST IDAHO/SOUTHEAST OREGON AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BOISE IDAHO 140 PM MDT THU AUG 1 2002 MOSTLY DRY WESTERLY FLOW ALOFT WAS OVER THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON. THE FLOW WILL BE BACKING TONIGHT AS AN UPPER TROUGH NOW OVER B.C. BEGINS TO DIG SLOWLY SOUTH AND A WEAK SHORTWAVE TROUGH OFF THE CA COAST MOVES NORTHEASTWARD. THE WEAK SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL MOVE ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE AREA DURING THE DAY FRIDAY FOR A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER SOUTHERN TWIN FALLS COUNTY. ADDITIONAL BUT WEAKER WAVES WILL MOVE ACROSS THE ENTIRE AREA SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. WONT HAVE ANY POPS ABOVE 10 PCT WITH THESE WAVES. TEMPERATURES WILL COOL A LITTLE ON FRIDAY WITH WEAK COLD ADVECTION BEHIND DEPARTING SHORTWAVE AND SURFACE THERMAL TROUGH. SATURDAY WILL SEE A SLIGHT WARMING AHEAD OF NEXT WEAK WAVE THEN IT WILL BE A FEW DEGREES COOLER FOR SUNDAY WITH GENERALLY LOWER 500 MB HEIGHTS AS THE MEAN UPPER TROUGH DEEPENS A BIT ALONG THE COAST. IN THE EXTENDED PERIOD (MON-THU)...UPPER TROUGH ALONG THE COAST HOLDS IN PLACE WITH ONLY THE WESTERN AND NORTHERN MOST ZONES SEEING A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS MON-WED. BY LATE WED AND NEXT THU THE UPPER TROUGH PULLS AWAY TO THE NORTHEAST OF THE AREA. MOST OF SOUTHWEST IDAHO WILL NOT HAVE BETTER THAN A 10 PCT CHANCE OF SHOWERS THROUGH THE PERIOD. The Garden Valley Complex Fire started on July 22nd as 30 small lightning-caused fires and grew to cover 1131 acres in the Boise National Forest before being contained on August 10th. No structures were lost. The total cost of fighting the fires was $8.1 million.
