EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL 228 PM EDT SUN JUL 21 2002 CURRENT WEATHER...DOPPLER RADAR DETECTING A CLUSTER OF STORMS AND SHOWERS EAST SOUTHEAST OF CAPE CANAVERAL AND A BAND OF SHOWERS AND STRONG STORMS OVER THE INTERIOR WHERE SUN HAD DESTABILIZED THE ATMOSPHERE. THE WEATHER BUOY 20 MILES OFFSHORE THE CAPE WAS RECORDING EAST WINDS AROUND 20 KNOTS...DUE TO STORMS AND SHOWERS... AND 3 FOOT SEAS. LAPS AND RUC ANALYSES INDICATE A VORTICITY CENTER OVER CAPE CANAVERAL. LATEST VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGES SHOWS A GRADUAL ERODING OF THE THICK CIRRUS SHIELD OVER SOUTH BREVARD...INDIAN RIVER AND SAINT LUCIE COUNTIES. FRONT/SURFACE TROUGH WAS MOVING ACROSS SURFACE RIDGE AXIS REMAINS OVER SOUTH FLORIDA AND WATER VAPOR LOOP SHOWS A TROUGH WAS OVER SOUTHERN GEORGIA. WATER MODELS CONTINUE TO DEPICT SURFACE RIDGE HOLDING STRONG OVER SOUTH FLORIDA...THE FLORIDA STRAITS AND GULF OF MEXICO THROUGH FRIDAY WHILE AT THE SAME TIME...TROUGHING PERSISTS OVER THE SOUTHEAST. MOISTURE REMAINS AROUND 2 INCHES WHICH WILL KEEP POPS IN THE 50 TO 60 PERCENT RANGE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING THEN DIE DOWN BY MIDNIGHT. THE EXTENDED SEGMENT OF THE GFS SHOWS THE SURFACE RIDGE STARTING TO MOVE NORTH BEGINNING ON MONDAY WHICH IS BEYOND THIS FORECAST PACKAGE. THE ONLY PROBLEM WILL BE TO TIME WEAK IMPULSE OF ENERGY ROUNDING THE BASE OF THE TROUGH OVER THE SOUTHEAST. DO NOT SEE ANY MAJOR CHANGES TO CURRENT FORECAST PACKAGE.
