SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
245 AM MST THU AUG 29 2002

.SYNOPSIS...
A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE OVER THE WESTERN STATES...MAINLY
NORTH OF ARIZONA INTO THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND. MONSOON MOISTURE OVER
THE EASTERN ARIZONA WILL PROVIDE A CHANCE FOR MOUNTAIN THUNDERSTORMS
INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. HIGH PRESSURE IS FORECAST TO REBUILD OVER THE
WESTERN STATES BY NEXT TUESDAY...PROVIDING WARMER AFTERNOONS.

.DISCUSSION...
A LARGE TROF CONTINUED TO CIRCULATE OVER THE WESTERN STATES...
CENTERED JUST SOUTHWEST OF BOISE ID AT 08Z. A RATHER SHARP EMBEDDED
SHORTWAVE/VORT MAX WAS SEEN ROTATING AROUND THE BASE OF TROF AND
INTO WESTERN AZ...PROVIDING DYNAMICS FOR A CONTINUATION OF THUNDER
STORMS IN EAST CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST AZ AT THE MOMENT (08Z).
SECONDARY CIRCULATIONS OR AGEO-STROPHIC FLOW REALLY SURGED THE
MONSOON MOISTURE NORTH FROM MEXICO ON WEDNESDAY...AND REGIONAL
SOUNDINGS AND PLOT DATA SHOWED A DEEP PLUME OF LOW LEVEL MOISTURE
CONTINUES ALONG AN AXIS FROM JUST NORTH OF PHOENIX TO TUCSON.

FORECASTS FOR PARTS OF THE SOUTH CENTRAL DESERTS WILL BE TRICKY
TODAY...MAINLY BECAUSE WE ARE NOT SURE WHERE THE ENTRANCE REGION OF
THE JET MAX WILL BE POSITIONED...AS THE SHORTWAVE (CURRENTLY MOVING
INTO WESTERN AZ) EXITS THE STATE INTO SOUTHWEST COLORADO THIS
AFTERNOON. MODELS SEEM TO INDICATE THE JET MAX ENTRANCE REGION WILL
BE LOCATED OVER THE WHITE MOUNTAINS AND PARTS OF SOUTHEAST AZ...
HOWEVER IT COULD EXTEND WEST INTO PARTS OF THE SOUTH CENTRAL
DESERTS. THEREFORE WITH ABUNDANT MONSOON MOISTURE...WE WILL INCLUDE
A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS ON THE SOUTH CENTRAL DESERTS...
WITH A BETTER CHANCE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF ZONE 24 INTO THE EVENING
HOURS.

FLOW ALOFT BECOMES MORE LAMINAR FROM THE SOUTHWEST FRIDAY AND THE
WEEKEND WITH NO SHORTWAVE ACTIVITY. MOISTURE VALUES THIN A LITTLE
OVER THE WEEKEND...HOWEVER THERE ARE SOME HINTS OF AN UPPER LEVEL
DEFORMATION ZONE DEVELOPING OVER THE WHITE MOUNTAINS AND PARTS OF
SOUTHEAST AZ SATURDAY AFTERNOON (FOR POSSIBLE ENHANCED CONVECTIVE
ACTIVITY). THEREFORE WE WILL CONTINUE A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR
THUNDERSTORMS OVER OUR MOUNTAINOUS ZONE 24 FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND.

THE AIRMASS COULD DRY OUT SOMEWHAT NEXT WEEK...HOWEVER WE WILL NOT
REMOVE THUNDERSTORM THREATS OVER ZONE 24. VASQUEZ

.PSR...NONE.
