NORTHERN ARIZONA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF AZ
215 PM MST THU AUG 01 2002

.SYNOPSIS...MOISTURE MOVING INTO THE STATE FROM THE EAST AND
SOUTHEAST WILL CONTINUE THE CHANCE FOR AFTERNOON AND EVENING SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS WELL INTO NEXT WEEK. DAYTIME TEMPERATURES WILL
REMAIN AROUND SEASONAL NORMALS.

.DISCUSSION...LAYERED EAST TO SOUTHEAST FLOW THROUGH NEW MEXICO AND
INTO ARIZONA WILL KEEP THE REGION MOIST FOR SEVERAL DAYS. CONVECTION
FINALLY FORMING WHERE THE SUNNY BREAKS WERE THIS MORNING AND OVER
TERRAIN...ESPECIALLY FROM THE WHITE MOUNTAINS EASTWARD. FULLY EXPECT
THIS CONVECTION TO CONTINUE TO PROPAGATE WESTWARD INTO THE EVENING
HOURS...THIS WILL KEEP THINGS ACTIVE...ESPECIALLY SOUTH OF THE RIM.
AIRMASS WILL CONTINUE TO SATURATE INTO SATURDAY...PROVIDING AMPLE
MONSOONAL CONVECTION EACH DAY. SOME SOUTHWEST FLOW WILL WORK ITS WAY
INTO WESTERN ARIZONA LATE IN THE WEEKEND AS A TROUGH DEVELOPS OFF THE
NORTHWEST COAST. LATEST MODEL GUIDANCE INDICATING THAT THIS TROUGH
WILL NOT BE AS STRONG AS LAST NIGHTS RUNS SUGGESTED...AND THAT THE
RIDGE AXIS WILL REMAIN INTACT. THIS COULD ACTUALLY BE A SCENARIO
THAT WOULD LEAD TO A BIG MOISTURE INCREASE ACROSS THE STATE BY MID
WEEK. DO NOT THINK THAT THE CURRENT WORDING SHOULD BE CHANGED VERY
MUCH...WILL LEAVE STANDARD MONSOON WORDING IN FOR NOW. PETERSON.
