AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION FOR WESTERN SD AND NORTHEASTERN WY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RAPID CITY SD 300 PM MDT WED AUG 8 2001 LEE SIDE EDDY HAS DEVELOPED ALONG THE ERN SLOPES OF THE BLACK HILLS THIS AFTERNOON AS SOUTHWEST WINDS INCREASE AHEAD OF THE SFC TROUGH. THUNDERSTORMS HAVE FIRED IN THE CONVERGENCE ZONE OVER THE SOUTHERN BLKHLS...AND ARE MOVING SLOWLY SOUTHEAST. RUC INDICATES SFC BASED CAPE IS AROUND 1000 J/KG OVER THAT AREA WITH NO CAP ATTM. EXPECT TO SEE THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY END THERE EARLY THIS EVENING AS SFC TROUGH AND LIFT SHIFT SE. COLD FRONT WAS JUST ENTERING FAR NW SD AT 20Z. WINDS BEHIND THE FRONT WERE GUSTING TO NEARLY 30 KTS. SECONDARY FRONT LEADING THE COLD AIR HAD JUST ENTERED NRN MT. SFC BASED INSTABILITY IS REALLY NOT VERY IMPRESSIVE ACROSS THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON. TEMPERATURES ARE HOT BUT DEWPOINTS ARE GENERALLY IN THE 45F TO 55F RANGE. TSRA WILL LIKELY BE OF THE ELEVATED VARIETY BEHIND THE FRONT THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT AS IS CURRENTLY EVIDENT OVER ERN MT. COLD FRONT WILL REACH THE RAP AREA AROUND 700PM AND WILL MOVE THROUGH OUR SW SD ZONES AFTER MIDNIGHT. WINDS HAVE BEEN GUSTING TO NEARLY 30KTS BEHIND THE FRONT OVER ERN MT THIS AFTERNOON...WITH PRESSURE RISES AROUND 3MB/3HR SO EXPECT TO SEE WINDY CONDITIONS TONIGHT AS THE SFC PRESSURE GRADIENT TIGHTENS OVER OUR CWA AND LL CAA STRENGTHENS. THURSDAY LOOKS TO BE BREEZY...AT LEAST UNTIL THE EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS AS LL CAA CONTINUES. MODEL SOUNDINGS OFF THE 18Z ETA INDICATE SHALLOW COLD LAYER AT THE SURFACE WITH WAA ALOFT. THEREFORE...AFTER LINGERING PRECIP EXITS SOUTHERN SD...WILL KEEP A DRY FORECAST FOR THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT. THE SURFACE HIGH MOVES OFF TO THE EAST ON FRIDAY...ALLOWING FOR A RETURN FLOW MOISTURE TO DEVELOP OVER ERN WYOMING...FOR A SLIGHT CHANCE OF TSRA THERE. IN THE EXTENDED FORECAST...FLAT RIDGE BUILDS OFF TO THE WEST ON SATURDAY WITH WEAK SHORTWAVES CROSSING THE NORTHERN PLAINS IN THE NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT. DRY AIR TO THE EAST WILL LIMIT PRECIP POTENTIAL BUT WILL INCLUDE A CHANCE OF TSRA OVER NE WY AND SW SD AS THE MOISTURE CONTINUES TO FLOW NORTHWARD ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE DEPARTING HIGH. GENERAL WARMING TREND WILL BE FOUND THROUGH WEDNESDAY AS THE UPPER RIDGE BUILDS EAST. WILL KEEP A CHANCE OF TSRA IN THE FORECAST FOR EACH DAY AS WEAK DISTURBANCES CONTINUE ACROSS THE AREA.
