UTAH AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT 800 PM MDT TUE JUL 17 2001 SYNOPSIS...THE STRONG SOUTHWEST FLOW ALOFT WILL REMAIN OVER UTAH FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS. PATCHY MID AND HIGH LEVEL MOISTURE WILL REMAIN OVER NORTHWEST UTAH TONIGHT AND AGAIN ON WEDNESDAY WITH LIMITED MOISTURE SLOWLY RETURNING TO THE SOUTH AND EAST. DISCUSSION...TROUGH FORECAST TO CAMP OUT NEAR THE WEST COAST FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE WILL REMAIN PARKED OVER THE PLAINS. MOSTLY DRY SOUTHWEST FLOW TO CONTINUE OVER UTAH WITH PATCHY MID AND HIGH LEVEL MOISTURE ENCROACHING ON THE SOUTHERN AND NORTHWESTERN EXTREMITIES OF THE FORECAST AREA OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. DRYING WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE EXTENDED PERIOD. A SHORT WAVE WILL BRUSH NORTHWEST UTAH TONIGHT AND OTHER SHORTWAVES WILL EJECT FROM THE TROUGH OR EASTERLY WAVES WILL ROTATE AROUND THE WEST END OF THE HIGH OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. UPDATED AFTERNOON PACKAGE TO INCLUDE SOUTHWEST WINDS OVER ALL BUT THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE STATE. THESE WINDS WILL DIMINISH THIS EVENING. ALSO ALLOWED FOR ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE NIGHT OVER THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE STATE. SATELLITE SHOWS A WEAK SHORT WAVE MOVING SLOWLY ACROSS NORTHERN UTAH TONIGHT AND MODEL DATA BRING TOGETHER A FEW INGREDIENTS...SUCH AS A WEAK CONVERGENCE-DIVERGENCE COUPLET...THE UPPER LEVEL JET STREAM AND A WEAK FRONTAL BOUNDARY WHICH IS SLIDING TO A HALT OVER THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE STATE. THIS FRONT WILL SHIFT THE WINDS TO THE NORTHWEST OVER NORTHWEST UTAH THIS EVENING. MAY HAVE TO INCLUDE ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS IN THE CACHE VALLEY TONIGHT...BUT WILL WAIT UNTIL LATER AND SEE IF CONDITIONS DO INDEED DEVELOP. BY TOMORROW THERE COULD BE ENOUGH MOISTURE ALONG THE ARIZONA BORDER FOR ISOLATED ACTIVITY OVER THE EXTREME SOUTHEAST CORNER OF UTAH. THIS BAND OF MOISTURE IS EXPECTED TO SPREAD NORTH THROUGH EASTERN UTAH THURSDAY FOR A MINIMAL MENTION OF THUNDERSTORMS TO ALL OF THE EASTERN ZONES. SLC 0001 CDC 0001 YOUNG .SLC...NONE.
