SOUTH PLAINS AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX
115 PM CDT SAT JUL 28 2001

ATMOSPHERE IS STILL VERY MOIST BUT NOT AS UNSTABLE AS THIS TIME
YESTERDAY. TWO AREAS WOULD APPEAR SLIGHTLY MORE FAVORABLE FOR
CONVECTION LATER TODAY. ONE WOULD BE ALONG EDGE OF DEEPER SUB
TROPICAL MOISTURE OVER THE NORTHWEST COUNTIES NEAR UPPER LEVEL SHEAR
AXIS. THE OTHER WOULD BE IN THE LOW ROLLING PLAINS NEAR THE WEAK
VORT CENTER THAT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST OF THE ACTIVITY YESTERDAY.
WILL KEEP AT LEAST SLIGHT CHANCE POPS OVER MOST AREAS FOR THIS
EVENING... SUBJECT TO CHANGE BASED ON LAST MINUTE RADAR TRENDS.

MODELS HAVE NOT HANDLED THIS BROAD RIDGE THAT WELL OVER THE PAST FEW
DAYS. THE TREND NEXT FEW DAYS SEEMS TO BE THAT RIDGE WILL STRENGTHEN
SOMEWHAT WITH LOWER AND MID ATMOSPHERE DRYING. THIS WILL RESULT IN
RISING MID LEVEL TEMPERATURES AND MORE CONVECTIVE INHIBITION...THUS
ONLY ISOLATED POPS AT BEST. ETA HAS HIGH BUILDING NORTHWARD WITH
EASTERLY MID LEVEL FLOW OVER MOST OF THE AREA EARLY BY LATE MONDAY
INTO TUESDAY. SOME PRECIP COULD OCCUR WITH EASTERLY MOVING
SHORTWAVES EMBEDDED IN THIS FLOW...BUT THAT WOULD LIKELY BE FARTHER
SOUTH... GIVEN MODEL SYNOPTIC TRENDS. WITH THAT IN MIND...WILL KEEP
EXTENDED DRY WITH NO DISTINCT FEATURES APPARENT IN MEDIUM RANGE
PROGS TO FOCUS CONVECTION. UPPER HIGH LOOKS LIKE IT WILL CONTINUE TO
DOMINATE. TEMPERATURES WILL LIKELY CREEP UPWARD ONCE AGAIN.
