SOUTH PLAINS AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX
250 PM CDT SUN JUL 15 2001

GENERAL LONG WAVE PATTERN TO REMAIN STATIC THROUGH THE WEEK WITH
TROUGHS POSITIONED OVER BOTH COASTS AND HIGH PRESSURE WEDGED IN
BETWEEN...CENTERED OVER TX. OTHER THAN A CHANCE FOR TSTMS TONIGHT...
PATTERN LOOKS SIMILAR TO THAT OF THE PAST SEVERAL WEEKS WITH HOT AND
DRY CONDITIONS PREVAILING.

15/19Z SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACED A LEE-SIDE TROUGH ALONG THE BASE OF
THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF NM AND CO WITH SURFACE DEWPOINTS IN THE 60S
ACROSS MOST OF THE FORECAST AREA. TSTMS CURRENTLY INITIATING OVER
THE MOUNTAINS WILL MOVE E/NE INTO THE PLAINS OF NM/CO LATER THIS
AFTERNOON AND PROPAGATE INTO THE TX PANHANDLE THIS EVENING. ADEQUATE
LOW LEVEL MOISTURE COMBINED WITH STRONG AFTERNOON INSOLATION SHOULD
SUSTAIN TSTM ACTIVITY THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS. LATEST MSAS SHOWS
SBCAPE SURPASSING 2000 J/KG WITH RAPIDLY DECREASING CIN. POTENTIAL
EXISTS FOR TSTMS TO ORGANIZE INTO A MCS LATER TONIGHT AND AFFECT
MAINLY THE TX PANHANDLE WHERE THE 500MB FLOW WILL BE STRONGEST. WILL
HAVE TO CAREFULLY WATCH TO SEE IF THE LOW LEVEL JET CAN SUSTAIN THE
MCS PAST MIDNIGHT AND/OR PROMOTE ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT FARTHER
SOUTH INTO MORE OF THE FORECAST AREA. FOR NOW PLAN ON KEEPING 30 POPS
ACROSS THE NW ZONES TAPERED BY 20 POPS REMAINDER OF ZONES EXCLUDING
THE SE. BEST SEVERE THREAT LOOKS TO REMAIN IN THE PANHANDLES IN THE
REGION OF BETTER DIRECTIONAL AND SPEED SHEAR WHICH IS WELL HANDLED
IN THE SPC DAY 1 OUTLOOK. WILL EXPAND MENTION OF SEVERE WEATHER AND
INSERT MENTION OF LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN INTO ALL OF THE NORTHERN ZONES.

DRIER AND WARMER CONDITIONS EXPECTED THROUGH TUE AS HEIGHTS AND
TEMPERATURES ALOFT INCREASE. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE RECORD MONDAY OF
101 (1956) AT KLBB LOOKS TO BE IN JEOPARDY WITH TEMPERATURES
FORECAST TO SURPASS THE CENTURY MARK. NO CHANGES PLANNED FOR THE
EXTENDED FORECAST AS INFLUENCES OF THE UPPER RIDGE CONTINUES.

AREA THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LUBBOCK TX
405 PM CDT SUN JUL 15 2001

THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE EXTREME
SOUTHERN TEXAS PANHANDLE AS WELL AS THE NORTHERN PORTIONS OF THE
SOUTH PLAINS AND ROLLING PLAINS THIS EVENING AND TONIGHT. THE RISK
AREA IS GENERALLY ALONG AND NORTH OF A LINE FROM THE MULESHOE

EXPECTED TO ORGANIZE AND MOVE EAST INTO THE PORTIONS OF TEXAS
PANHANDLE AND WESTERN SOUTH PLAINS LATER THIS EVENING...POSSIBLY
REACHING THE SOUTHEAST TEXAS PANHANDLE AND NORTHERN ROLLING PLAINS
BY MIDNIGHT. THE ATMOSPHERE ACROSS THE REGION IS UNSTABLE AND THERE
IS A POTENTIAL FOR SOME OF THESE STORMS TO BECOME SEVERE. LARGE HAIL
AND DAMAGING WINDS ARE THE MAIN SEVERE WEATHER THREATS ALONG WITH
LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL AND ISOLATED AREAS OF FLOODING.

LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES...EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS AND SPOTTER
GROUPS SHOULD MONITOR THE LATEST WEATHER CONDITIONS AND BE PREPARED
