SOUTHEAST TEXAS FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX 1013 AM CDT SUN JUL 1 2001 CURRENT SITUATION INVOLVES THE INTERACTION OF AN UPPER LOW JUST OFF THE COAST...THE SHEAR AXIS AT 500 MB OVERHEAD...AND LOW LEVEL TROUGHS OF LOW PRESSURE AND OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES. 12Z SOUNDINGS AT CRP AND LCH INDICATED LI/S OF -9 AND CAPES OF 3000 TO 4000...WHILE THE ACARS/MAPS SOUNDINGS FOR IAH...GLS...AND CLL INDICATED PW/S OF NEAR 2 INCHES. THE 12Z MESO-ETA LOOKS TO INITIALIZE FAIRLY CLOSE TO THE 12Z UPPER AIR ANALYSIS. IT SHOWS THE 200 AND 300 MB LOW DRIFTING INTO THE COASTAL AREAS THIS AFTERNOON AND BRINGS A FAIRLY DECENT SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVERHEAD AT 500 MB. IN ADDITION THE CURRENT RADAR SHOWS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ALREADY DEVELOPING ALONG WHAT COULD BE AN EARLY SEABREEZE FRONT. WITH THESE FACTORS IN MIND WILL UP POPS TO THE LIKELY CATEGORY. ALSO...SEVERE WEATHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER TODAY INCLUDE HAIL...500 MB TEMPERATURES ARE -10 TO -12...AND WIND. BECAUSE OF THE SLOW POTENTIAL STORM MOTION...UNDER 10 KNOTS...LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL WILL BE A PROBLEM AS WELL. MARINE SEAS...BAY WATERS...AND WINDS LOOK TO BE BELOW CAUTION CRITERIA. MARINERS WILL NEED TO WATCH FOR THE OCCASIONAL THUNDERSTORM OR SHOWER PRODUCING WATER SPOUTS.
