NORTHEAST OREGON/SOUTHEAST WASHINGTON FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PENDLETON OR 815 AM PDT SAT AUG 4 2001 A BROAD UPPER TROUGH REMAINS ALONG THE NORTHWEST COAST THIS MORNING. A NARROW BAND OF LIGHT PRECIPITATION CURRENTLY STRETCHES FROM EAST CENTRAL WASHINGTON THROUGH CENTRAL OREGON ALONG A SURFACE COLD FRONT. THE UPPER PART OF THE COLD FRONT HAS ALREADY MOVED THROUGH THE FORECAST AREA FRIDAY EVENING. THE ATMOSPHERE REMAINS UNSTABLE AHEAD OF THE FRONT IN EXTREME NE OREGON SO THERE MAY BE AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM THERE. BY LATE THIS AFTERNOON THE FRONT AND PRECIPITATION SHOULD HAVE ALL MOVED EAST OF THE AREA WITH CLEARING SKIES AND LOCAL BREEZY CONDITIONS BEHIND IT...MAINLY THROUGH THE CASCADE PASSES AND COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE. ANOTHER WEAK SHORT WAVE WILL SLIDE DOWN THE BACK SIDE OF THE UPPER TROUGH AND WILL MOVE DOWN THE CANADIAN COAST INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY SUNDAY. HOWEVER...AT THIS TIME IT APPEARS THE DYNAMICS AND MAIN ENERGY WILL STAY TO THE NORTH AND AFFECT MOSTLY NORTHERN AND NORTHWEST WASHINGTON. THEN A STRONG 110 KT JET WILL MOVE ACROSS NORTHWEST WASHINGTON LATE ON SUNDAY. THE DYNAMICS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JET WILL STAY TOO FAR TO THE NORTH TO AFFECT OUR CWA. FINALLY...AFTER THAT THE FOUR CORNERS HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM BUILDS BACK INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WITH WARMER AND DRY CONDITIONS. THERE IS A HINT THAT SOME MONSOONAL MOISTURE COULD WORK ITS WAY INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST WHICH WOULD PROVIDE MOISTURE FOR HIGH BASED THUNDERSTORMS. HOWEVER...SEVERAL SHORTWAVE DISTURBANCES FROM CANADA WILL MOST LIKELY KEEP THAT MOISTURE PUSHED TOO FAR TO THE SOUTH AND EAST OF THE &CWA AND WILL KEEP A DRY WESTERLY FLOW OVER THE AREA. RSC.
