On Friday, August 31st, a strong cold front approached northern New Jersey from the west late Friday afternoon. In advance of the front, scattered showers and thunderstorms developed in a warm, moist and unstable air mass. Some of these thunderstorms contained locally heavy rainfall. In Hudson County, a slow-moving thunderstorm developed near Jersey City, and remained nearly stationary before shifting east and dissipating. Flooding resulted in the vicinity of Jersey City, where a building collapsed due to the added weight of rainwater which collected on the building's rooftop.
