NORTHERN GREAT BASIN FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV 220 PM PDT WED SEP 12 2001 .SYNOPSIS...THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST. THIS WILL RESULT IN A DECREASE IN SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TONIGHT. ON THURSDAY ONLY A FEW LINGERING SHOWERS WILL OCCUR NEAR THE IDAHO AND OREGON BORDERS. ANOTHER LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL BRUSH THE FAR NORTH MONDAY AND TUESDAY FOR A SMALL THREAT OF SHOWERS. .DISCUSSION...UPPER LOW CENTERED NEAR SACRAMENTO WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE TOWARDS THE NORTHEAST. THIS WILL ALLOW DRIER AIR WORKING AROUND THE BASE OF THE SYSTEM TO MOVE INTO NORTHERN AND EAST CENTRAL NEVADA RESULTING IN A DECREASE IN SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TONIGHT. ON THURSDAY ENOUGH LINGERING MOISTURE AND INSTABILITY WILL CONTINUE ACROSS THE FAR NORTH FOR ISOLATED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. SHORT WAVE NEAR 35N/145W WAS INITIALIZED TOO WEAK BY ALL THE MODELS. IF THIS SYSTEM DIGS FAR ENOUGH SOUTH IT COULD DRAW UP SOME MOISTURE FROM TROPICAL STORM IVO INTO OUR FORECAST AREA OVER THE WEEKEND. WILL HAVE TO WAIT TO SEE HOW THIS DEVELOPS. FOR NOW WILL GO ALONG WITH THE MODEL IDEA OF BRINGING THIS SHORT WAVE INTO NORTHWEST NEVADA ON SATURDAY WITH ONLY ENOUGH MOISTURE FOR PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES. MODELS BRUSH THE NORTH WITH ANOTHER SHORT WAVE IN THE MONDAY/TUESDAY TIME FRAME SO WILL CONTINUE WITH A SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS IN THE FAR NORTH. COLLINS .EKO...NONE.
