AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PADUCAH KY
247 AM CST TUE FEB 27 2001

MAIN FORECAST QUESTIONS ARE POPS/TIMING/TYPE FOR TODAY INTO TONIGHT...
THEN WED NIGHT POPS.

07Z SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS A COLD FRONT EXTENDING FROM THE SOUTHEAST
GREAT LAKES REGION THROUGH CENTRAL INDIANA AND CENTRAL MISSOURI INTO
CENTRAL OKLAHOMA. LATEST IR SATELLITE/SURFACE OBS SHOW MID LEVEL
CLOUDINESS ACROSS ILLINOIS INTO CENTRAL MISSOURI INTO OKLAHOMA. LOW
CLOUDS WITH SCATTERED LIGHT SNOW/FREEZING RAIN/RAIN REPORTS WERE
ACROSS NORTHERN TEXAS INTO KANSAS AND NORTHERN MISSOURI. IR
SATELLITE/LIGHTNING DATA INDICATING THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT OVER
THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS FROM SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMA INTO CENTRAL TEXAS.

COMPARING FWC/MAV VALUES...BOTH MODELS HAVE DONE SOME BACKING OFF
SINCE THE LAST RUN ON POPS FOR LATE TODAY INTO TONIGHT. ETA BRINGS
PRECIP INTO THE REGION THE FASTEST TODAY...AROUND 18Z...WITH AVN
BRINGING SOME LIGHT PRECIP INTO NORTHERN AREAS OF THE FORECAST AREA
AROUND 00Z WED...NGM AROUND 06Z. NGM ALSO HAS HIGHER QPF FOR
NORTHERN AREAS...WHILE AVN AND ETA KEEP HIGHEST QPF OVER SOUTHERN
PORTIONS WITH AVN BEING MOST MINIMAL. WILL BASICALLY FOLLOW A
COMPROMISE OF ETA/AVN. WILL CONTINUE WITH CHANCE POPS ACROSS THE
AREA BUT PUSH THEM TO MAINLY THIS AFTERNOON...BUT WILL CHECK RADAR
TRENDS JUST PRIOR TO ISSUANCE. WILL ALSO FOLLOW THE MODELS TRENDING
BACK SOMEWHAT ON THE POPS FOR TONIGHT...WITH CHANCE POPS IN THE
NORTH AND LIKELY POPS FOR THE SOUTH. WILL ALSO THROW IN A LOW POP
FOR WED MORN FOR SOUTHEAST SECTION OF FA. AS FOR PRECIP CHANGING
OVER TO SNOW...WILL CONTINUE WITH GOING PACKAGE TREND FOR A CHANGE
IN NORTHERN SECTIONS BEFORE ENDING.

ON TO WED NIGHT...MRF AND AVN BRING MINOR PRECIP INTO SOUTHWEST
PORTIONS OF THE FA. WILL KEEP A CHANCE OVER THE AREA FOR WED
NIGHT...BUT WILL BACK OFF ON POPS A BIT.

INTO THE EXTENDED...AVN AND MRF BOTH SHOW SOME PRECIP OVER THE AREA
SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY...ASSOCIATED WITH A LOW MOVING THROUGH
THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO. WITH TRACK OF LOW SO FAR SOUTH AND QPF
STILL LOOKING MINIMAL...WILL OPT TO KEEP DRY FORECAST BUT WILL TWEAK
CLOUDS TRENDS.

FWC/MAV GUIDANCE VERY SIMILAR AND WILL FOLLOW CLOSELY...WHICH WILL
ONLY REQUIRE MINOR TWEAKS TO GOING PACKAGE. EXTENDED TEMPS ALSO
MATCH PRETTY WELL WITH NEW MRF GUIDANCE AND WILL ONLY MAKE MINOR
CHANGES.

Due to backwater effects from the flooding Mississippi River, the Big Muddy River rose to flood stage at Murphysboro on the last two days of the month. The river was no more than a foot above flood stage, so only minor flooding of cropland occurred.

What these are

Flood
Flooding that develops more slowly than a flash flood: rivers leaving their banks, or water standing over land for an extended time.

After NWS Directive 10-1605, the rules offices file Storm Data by.
