HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SYNOPTIC DISCUSSION AND GUIDANCE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 10 AM HST THU FEB 8 2001 SUMMARY...HIGH CLOUDS COMING UP FROM THE SOUTH WILL BLANKET THE ISLANDS. THE SOUTHERN EXTENSION OF A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM NORTH OF HAWAII WILL MOVE WEST FROM THE BIG ISLAND TO KAUAI THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. A CHANCE OF HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL ACCOMPANY THE EXTENSION. DISCUSSION...HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS FORMED OVERNIGHT OVER THE COASTAL WATERS EAST AND SOUTHEAST OF THE BIG ISLAND. THE MOISTURE FOR THE DEEP CONVECTION WAS PROVIDED BY CONVERGENT LOW LEVEL FLOW INTO A LOW NORTH OF THE ISLANDS. THE INSTABILITY WAS PROBABLY PROVIDED BY AN UPPER TROUGH TO THE WEST AND PERHAPS THE LOW ITSELF. THE CONVECTION WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE OVERLAND THE SOUTHEAST PART OF THE BIG ISLAND. THE LOW IS PRESENTLY CENTERED ABOUT 500 MILES NORTH OF KAUAI AND MOVING TO THE NORTHWEST. THE MOISTURE ON THE BIG ISLAND WILL MOVE WEST UP THE ISLAND CHAIN AS THE LOW MOVES AWAY. THERE IS A CHANCE OF HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS IN THE FORECAST BECAUSE THE MOIST AND UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE AND BECAUSE AFTERNOON HEATING MAY AIDE AND ABE)T THE CONVECTIVE PROCESS.
