WEST CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST FLORIDA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAMPA BAY AREA - RUSKIN FL 156 PM EDT SUN JUL 1 2001 FOR TONIGHT...I EXPECT AN ACTIVE CONVECTIVE PATTERN TO CONTINUE AND POSSIBLY RUN TO FAIRLY LATE...AS OUR COAST SEEMS BE BE MORE INFLUENCED BY THE NEARLY STATIONARY EASTERLY WAVE IN THE GULF THAN THE TUTT LOW OFF THE ATLANTIC COAST. AS FOR THE WAVE CONVECTION CONTINUES TO FLAIR UP EVEN MORE SO THAN YESTERDAY. THE UPPER LOW THAT IS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE SURFACE FEATURE IS DRIFTING TO THE SOUTH AND WEST. DIFLUENCE IS INCREASING AND GIVING THE CONVECTION A BOOST. ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE FOR ANY DEVELOPMENT THERE IS A LOT OF SHEAR STILL IN THE AREA. THERE OF COURSE IS NOT A LOT OF DATA IN THE GULF AND MOST ALL OF THE WINDS...BEST I CAN TELL ARE CONVECTIVELY DRIVEN...BY THAT I MEAN DISORGANIZED MESOSCALE INFLOWS AND OUTFLOWS...BUT...CONSIDERING ITS PROXIMITY AND POSSIBLE EFFECTS ON OUR MARINE FORECAST WE NEED TO KEEP AN EYE ON IT. UPSTREAM AN UPPER LOW JUST EAST OF THE NORTHERN BAHAMAS IS STARTING TO SPREAD SOME SUBSIDENCE TO THE PENINSULA. THE STRONGER SUBSIDENCE REMAINS OFF SHORE. INTERESTINGLY IT IS STARTING TO ENHANCE A SURFACE WAVE ON ITS SOUTHEAST SIDE. MODEL INDICATIONS ARE THAT THIS TUTT LOW WILL DRIFT SOUTH AND WEST ACROSS CUBA OVER THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS...BUT MODELS DO NOT HANDLE THESE SYSTEMS WELL. IT SEEMS TO BE CUTTING OFF FROM THE TUTT AXIS AND SO A SLOW SOUTHWEST DRIFT SEEMS REASONABLE. BECAUSE OF THIS SYSTEM AND FLORIDA BEING ON THE SUBSIDENT SIDE I WILL CONTINUE THE TREND OF SLIGHTLY LOWER POPS IN THE FORECAST. TUESDAY AND BEYOND...THE MODELS ARE A LITTLE SLOWER IN DROPPING THE EAST COAST LONG WAVE TROUGH SOUTHWARD. IT LOOKS LIKE WE WILL NOT TRANSITION TO WESTERLY FLOW NOW UNTIL THURSDAY. TYPICALLY THE AVN HANDLES THESE LONGWAVE PATTERNS PRETTY WELL BUT WITH ALL OF THE TROPICAL CONVECTION AROUND WARMING THE ATMOSPHERE I WONDER IF THE AVN IS STILL A LITTLE TOO AMBITIOUS WITH THE TROUGH. FOR THE EXTENDED I WILL CONTINUE PERSISTENCE EXCEPT FOR A FEW SUBTLE TIMING CHANGES. NO MARINE OR FIRE WEATHER ISSUES AT THIS TIME...BUT WILL KEEP AN EYE TO THE WEST AS STATED ABOVE.
