SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
300 PM MST TUE FEB 27 2001

.SYNOPSIS...
A PACIFIC LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL SLOWLY MOVE EAST OVER BAJA
CALIFORNIA THIS EVENING...THEN NORTHEAST OVER ARIZONA TONIGHT AND
EARLY WEDNESDAY. SHOWERS WILL INCREASE OVER SOUTH CENTRAL ARIZONA
TONIGHT...WITH A CHANCE FOR SHOWERS CONTINUING OVER FAR SOUTHEAST
CALIFORNIA AND SOUTHWEST ARIZONA. SHOWERS WILL DIMINISH ON
WEDNESDAY...BUT ANOTHER WEATHER DISTURBANCE WILL BRING A SLIGHT
CHANCE FOR SHOWERS WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY. WEAK HIGH
PRESSURE WILL BUILD INTO THE AREA THIS WEEKEND...FOR PARTLY CLOUDY
SKIES AND A GRADUAL WARMING TREND.

.DISCUSSION...
PESKY UPPER LEVEL LOW JUST OFF THE SRN CA/NRN BAJA COAST AND
SLOWLY...VERY SLOWLY...MOVING TOWARD AZ. SAT IMAGERY ATTM SHOWS
CONSIDERABLE CLOUDINESS OVER MUCH OF OUR CWA...AS LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS
CONTINUE MAINLY OVER SE CA AND FAR WRN AZ. WILL KEEP CHANCE FOR
SHOWERS IN THE FCST TONIGHT FOR WRN ZONES...WITH CATEGORICAL POPS
OVER THE GREATER PHX AREA AS THE LOW SLOWLY MOVES EASTWARD. AVN/ETA
TIME HEIGHT CROSS SECTIONS AGREE BEST DYNAMICS FOR PHX WILL BE THIS
EVENING BETWEEN 00Z AND 06Z...JET MAX POSITION ALSO SUPPORTS THIS.
HAVE DECIDED TO ADD A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR THUNDERSTORMS TO ALL ZONES
FOR THIS EVENING...AS A FEW LIGHTNING STRIKES HAVE BEEN DETECTED
OVER SRN CA...AND THE COLD POOL SHOULD BE MOVING INTO AZ FOR STEEPER
LAPSE RATES OVERNIGHT. AS FOR SNOW LEVELS...DONT FEEL IT WILL BE
AN ISSUE OVER CA ZONE 30 FOR JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK...HOWEVER
...WILL ADD MIXED RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS OVER AZ ZONE 24 FOR TONIGHT
...WITH THICKNESS LEVELS INDICATING SNOW LEVEL NEAR 5500 FEET. WILL
KEEP CHANCE FOR SHOWERS OVER SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH-CENTRAL AZ THROUGH
EARLY WED MORNING. SKIES SHOULD BECOME PARTLY CLOUDY BY WED
AFTERNOON WITH ONLY A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR SHOWERS AS THE LOW LIFTS OUT
OF THE PICTURE AND MAKES ROOM FOR A SECOND DISTURBANCE DROPPING DOWN
FROM NV INTO CA. MODELS INDICATE SECOND LOW WILL DROP FURTHER WEST
AND SOUTH THAN PREVIOUSLY EXPECTED. WILL CONTINUE SLIGHT CHANCE FOR
SHOWERS OVER MUCH OF CWA THROUGH WED NIGHT...THEN SLIGHTLY INCREASE
THE CHANCE ON THURSDAY...WITH THE MENTION OF A POSSIBLE AFTERNOON
THUNDERSTORM AS AVN GUIDANCE HAS -2 LI OVER MUCH OF OUR CWA. AS FOR
THE EXTENDED...AT THIS TIME FEEL BEST WAY TO GO WILL BE BROAD
BRUSHING FRI THROUGH TUE WITH PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES AND A GRADUAL
WARMING TREND AT LEAST THROUGH SUNDAY...AS WEAK RIDGING BUILDS IN
OVER THE WKND. MORNING AVN RUN MORE AGGRESSIVE WITH REGARD TO
DEVELOPING STRONG SOUTHERN BRANCH OF THE JET OVER OUR AREA BY EARLY
NEXT WEEK. THEREFORE HAVE BACKED OFF ON WARMING TREND...AND HELD
TEMPS NEAR CLIMO SUNDAY THRU TUESDAY. WILL HAVE TO WATCH THIS
EVOLUTION CLOSELY...AS POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR DISTURBANCES TO
AFFECT CWA BY EARLY NEXT WEEK IF AVN ON TARGET. LW
