SOUTHWEST ARIZONA/SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PHOENIX AZ
1010 AM MST SUN AUG 12 2001

.SYNOPSIS...
A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER ARIZONA MEANS A CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS FOR SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA TODAY THROUGH
MONDAY. HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT WILL BE OFF THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
COAST BY MID WEEK. THIS WILL PUSH SOMEWHAT DRIER AIR FROM THE
PACIFIC OVER SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA AND FAR SOUTHWEST ARIZONA...AND
ELIMINATE THE CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS THERE BY MID WEEK.

.DISCUSSION...
THE LOW LEVELS OF THE AIRMASS WERE A FEW DEGREES COOLER THIS MORNING
COMPARED WITH YESTERDAY MORNING...AND LATE MORNING SURFACE REPORTS
WERE ALSO AT LEAST A FEW DEGREES COOLER. THIS SUPPORTS LOWER
TEMPERATURES THAT ARE ALREADY IN THE FORECAST FOR TODAY COMPARED
WITH YESTERDAY. CYCLONIC FLOW OR A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OF SOME SORT
IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE OVER ARIZONA THROUGH TUESDAY. A FLOW ALOFT
FROM THE NORTHEAST HAS PUSHED ENOUGH MOISTURE INTO FAR SOUTHEAST
ARIZONA TO RESULT IN THUNDERSTORMS THERE...AS WELL AS THE LOWER
COLORADO RIVER VALLEY THIS MORNING. PLAN ON KEEPING AT LEAST A
SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS IN SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA THROUGH
MONDAY NIGHT...AND THE LOWER COLORADO RIVER VALLEY THROUGH TUESDAY.
ALSO PLAN ON KEEPING A CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS FOR THE
REMAINDER OF SOUTHWEST AS WELL AS SOUTH-CENTRAL ARIZONA THROUGH
TUESDAY NIGHT. AFTER THAT...IT LOOKS AS IF HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT WILL
BE NEAR THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST WITH DRIER AIR FROM THE
PACIFIC MOVING OVER SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA TO AT LEAST SOUTHWEST
ARIZONA WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. THERE IS EVEN A POSSIBILITY THAT
ENOUGH DRIER AIR COULD PUSH ALL THE WAY TO SOUTH-CENTRAL ARIZONA AND
TEMPORARILY ELIMINATE THE CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS FOR
SOUTH-CENTRAL ARIZONA WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. WILL DISCUSS THIS
ISSUE AT THE MID DAY COORDINATION CALL WITH LAS VEGAS...FLAGSTAFF...
AND TUCSON NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICES.
