Flash Flooding and Hail in Oklahoma, May 5 to 6, 2000

At 848 pm cdt dime size hail was reported in the western part of Tulsa.At 851 pm cdt nickel size hail fell at the 71st and Lewis.At 852 pm cdt quarter size hail fell at 67th Peoria.At 853 pm cdt nickel size hail fell at 91st and Delaware.At 904 pm cdt quarter size hail fell at 91st and Sheridan.

At 908 pm cdt baseball size hail fell at 81st and Yale.At 908 pm cdt quarter size hail fell at 81st and Memorial.At 910 pm cdt golfball size hail fell at 81st and Sheridan.At 916 pm cdt golfball size hail fell at 91st and Memorial.

Golf ball size hail fell in the south part of Tulsa.

At 200 am cdt tennis ball size hail was reported 1 mile south of Sapulpa.At 202 am cdt quarter size hail was reported 2 miles north of Sapulpa.At 207 am cdt dime size hail was reported in Sapulpa.

Nickel size hail was reported in Westport.

Thunderstorm winds blew down large trees in Haskell.

Quarter size hail fell at Walnut Creek State Park.

Heavy rains fell over eastern Osage county during the early morning hours May 6. 2.80 inches fell at Barnsdall with higher amounts likely to the south. Several roads were flooded and a few were closed due to flooding. A few of the highways closed include Highway 11 1 1/2 miles north of Barnsdall and Highway 97 8 miles north of Sand Springs. The flooding likely caused damage to bridges and road in rural eastern Osage county.

Heavy rains fell across Tulsa county beginning the evening of May 5 and continuing through the night before ending the morning of May 6. The bulk of the rain fell over the western and southern parts of the county with 6.81 inches at Sand Springs and 5.84 inches at Jenks. Tulsa International Airport recorded 2.83 inches of rain. The most damage due to the flooding occurred in the Meadow Valley subdivision in Sand Springs. 115 homes were flooded in this subdivision as Fisher Creek overflowed. Flood damage was also reported in Jenks, Bixby, Glenpool, south Tulsa and Broken Arrow. Numerous roads and intersections were flooded. A few of the highways which were closed were Highway 75 near Glenpool, Highway 11 at 86th Street North and Highway 51 at 137th West Avenue. Damage to roads, bridges and infrastructure was estimated at $200,000. In addition to the property damage caused by the flood there was one fatality. Approximately 5 am cdt, a woman was traveling south on Sheridan Avenue in Tulsa between 71st street and 81st street. She drove her car into a stream which was flooding the road. Her car stalled and the water was rising so she got out of the car and was swept away. Her body was found a half mile downstream later that day.

Heavy rains fell across the eastern part of Creek county during the early morning hours of May 6.6.32 inches of rain was reported at Heyburn Dam and 8.12 inches were measured at Kiefer. The most flood damage was observed in Sapulpa where Rock Creek overflowed its banks. More than 150 homes and 12 businesses were damaged in Sapulpa. An additional 40 homes were evacuated in Kiefer where Childers Creek overflowed in banks. Numerous roads were closed due to the flooding. These roads included the Turner Turnpike between Kellyville and Bristow and Highway 66 south of Kellyville. The damage to roads and bridges in Creek county was estimated at $300,000.

Tennis ball size hail fell on the north side of Tulsa.

Heavy rains estimated between 2 and 3 inches caused flooding of low lying areas in Catoosa.

Heavy rains during the early morning hours caused low lying areas in Cleveland to be flooded. Other low lying areas in eastern Pawnee county were also likely flooded with some damage to bridges and roads.

Heavy rains fell over the western portion of Muskogee County during the early morning hours of May 6. A representative total of 4.5 inches was reported at Haskell. A few businesses in downtown Haskell had water enter them due to street flooding. In rural parts of the county to the south and west of Haskell streams flowed out of their banks causing two bridges and a large tin horn to be washed out.

Heavy rains fell across Wagoner county during the early morning hours May 6 with the reports of 5 to 6 inches common over the western part of the county. Flooding was widespread across Wagoner county but the most damage occurred in Coweta where Coweta Creek overflowed its banks into the Cottonwood subdivision. 21 homes were flooded in this subdivision. Numerous highways and roads were closed due to the flooding. A few of the highways closed included Highway 16 between Wagoner and Okay, Highway 104 between Porter and Haskell and Highway 72 between Coweta and Haskell. Damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure across the county were estimated at $175,000.

Heavy rains fell across northern Okmulgee county during the early morning hours on May 6 with 3.30 inches reported at Beggs. Numerous roads were flooded including Highway 75 11 miles north of Preston.10 bridges or large tin horns were washed out with several other roads receiving damage.
