A severe thunderstorm knocked down numerous trees, pulled trees onto power lines and ripped wires down throughout Sussex County. Several roads were closed. In Stillwater Township, three large trees were knocked down on one roadway blocking access to ten homes. In both Vernon and Sparta Townships, downed trees closed sections of New Jersey State Route 94. County Route 517 in Sparta Township was also closed because of downed trees. Power outages occurred in Ogdensburg Borough. In Green Township, schools were closed the next day (the 19th) because of downed wires. GPU Energy reported about 30,000 homes and businesses lost power throughout their service area in the northern half of New Jersey, 25,000 occurred within Sussex, Warren and Morris Counties.
