Four to 5 inches of rain fell on the Maple Creek basin during storms the afternoon of July 5 and again that night. The heavy rain caused Maple Creek to flood around Howells downstream to near Nickerson. At Nickerson the crest reached 15 feet at 1230 pm cst July 6. Flood stage is 10 feet. The creek dropped below flood stage around midnight. Flooding was confined to mainly agricultural lowlands, but a county road near Nickerson was under water for a while.
