Thunderstorms developed repeatedly along a weak, slow-moving front in east-central Kansas. One cluster of storms produced winds in excess of hurricane force in the suburbs of Kansas City during the early afternoon hours. Another cluster of storms in the early evening hours caused additional wind damage just a few miles north of where the earlier storms had tracked.

Emergency managers estimated winds at 70 mph. Several cars were blown off the road at Interstate 435 and 87th Street. Billboard signs were blown down and a parked semi trailer was overturned near 119th Street and Renner Road.
