A strong warm front lifted north into Iowa during the afternoon hours of the 22nd. Riding on a 60 kt jet at 850 mb, moisture streamed north into Iowa during the afternoon. Following an unseasonably cool period, temperatures rose into the mid 70s to low 80s as dew point temperatures climbed to near 70 degrees F. Thunderstorms erupted during the mid and late afternoon hours. Within one half hour or so the storms became severe. Most of the storms produced gusty winds and hail. There were several reports of severe hail, though the storms were more pulse in nature. The largest hail report came from Wayne County, where golf ball size hail pelted the town of Millerton. Winds gusted to 60 MPH as the storms moved through Garden City, in Decatur County.
