Damaging Winds in Illinois, June 23, 2000
Morning upper air analysis showed a low level thermal gradient from Eastern Minnesota through Eastern Iowa into Western Illinois. A southerly low level jet of 25 to 30 knots interacted with the boundary to trigger strong to severe thunderstorms over Northeast Iowa during the late morning.

Morning upper air analysis showed a low level thermal gradient from Eastern Minnesota through Eastern Iowa into Western Illinois. A southerly low level jet of 25 to 30 knots interacted with the boundary to trigger strong to severe thunderstorms over Northeast Iowa during the late morning. Thunderstorms continued to develop throughout the afternoon, organizing into a bow echo along the Mississippi River, and racing across West Central Illinois during the late afternoon and evening. Many reports of 40 to 50 mph winds and small hail were received. Strong winds downed trees and power lines in Henry County in Cambridge, Andover, Geneseo and Opheim.
