A strong cold front crossed northwestern Connecticut late on May 18. At the same time, very strong winds aloft moved over the area. The combination of the instability and lift ahead of the front spawned a line of thunderstorms. A couple of the thunderstorm cells tapped into the strong wind aloft to produce locally severe weather in Litchfield county. Wind gusts from seperate thunderstorms downed trees in New Milford during the late afternoon, and early evening. A wind gust was clocked at 59 mph in Washington. Large trees and power lines were brought down in Litchfield.
